CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, October 28. THE University of California-Berkeley’s women’s swim team has long suffered a major gap in its roster, specifically in its breaststroke ranks with Caitlin Leverenz pulling most of the weight. But Teri McKeever continues to add some major depth in that stroke with today’s verbal commitment by SwimMAC Carolina’s Maija Roses.<\/p>\n

Roses, a member of the USA Swimming junior worlds team, could be a major asset in Cal’s roster when she arrives next fall. She carries a lifetime best of 1:01.86 in the 100-yard breast and 2:13.19 in the 200-yard breast. Both of these times were done two years ago, showing that Roses has a lot of potential in the short course pool. She competed in the short course junior nationals last December, but her times were just short of her best.<\/p>\n
She swam a 2:31.77 in the 200 long course breast at the junior nationals, good enough for the title and a place on the junior world team. She’s just as good in the 100 breast, as evidenced by her 1:09.56 that got her third at juniors.<\/p>\n
Cal already has Spanish world championship breaststroke finalist Marina Garcia on the roster, and Roses will give McKeever more options — and point potential — in about a year’s time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
