LIVERMORE, California, October 25. THE California Golden Bears continue to build an epic Class of 2014 as No. 6 Nick Silverthorn of the Pleasanton Seahawks committed to head coach Dave Durden this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Silverthorn, who CollegeSwimming.com ranks sixth in the class and third in the state, is one of the most versatile swimmers in the class. Outside of having strength in the freestyle events, he can handle pretty much any longer distance race you throw at him with success.<\/p>\n
“I chose Cal because I could really see myself swimming well and succeeding in that program,” Silverthorn told Swimming World. “Plus there’s amazing academics to go along with a top notch swim program. I’m really looking forward to working with Dave [Durden] and Yuri [Suguiyama], and the guys on the team are people who can push you every day in the pool, and be your best friends outside the water.”<\/p>\n
Silverthorn’s top ranked swim is a 3:59.24 in the 400-meter free from 2010 Junior Nationals. He also blasted a 2:10.30 in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2009 Far Western Championships, before clocking a 3:55.01 in the 400-yard IM at the 2010 Short Course Nationals.<\/p>\n
Most recently, however, Silverthorn has been focusing on his breaststroke. He scorched a 53.61 in the 100-yard breast this May as part of a historic race that had three swimmers dipping under the overall national high school record at the California North Coast Sectional Championships. Silverthorn was third in the race, but will be the only one returning to the high school championships this upcoming season. He also has a 1:56.56 in the 200 breast from Speedo sectionals last year. He also clocked a 1:02.95 in the 100-meter breaststroke this summer at the Speedo Junior National Championships.<\/p>\n
