{"id":363604,"date":"2019-04-10T07:13:52","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T14:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=363604"},"modified":"2019-04-10T07:26:51","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T14:26:51","slug":"2019-australian-swimming-championships-liam-schluter-breaks-para-world-record-chalmers-wins-third","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-australian-swimming-championships-liam-schluter-breaks-para-world-record-chalmers-wins-third\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Australian Swimming Championships: Liam Schluter Breaks Para World Record; Chalmers Wins Third"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fourth night of the 2019 Australian Swimming Championships from Adelaide did not see any records fall but\u00a0<strong>Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Cate Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>put up impressive times nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liam Schluter\u00a0<\/strong>also broke a world record in the 200 free on Wednesday night in Adelaide, lowering almost a full second off the world record from\u00a0<strong>Thomas Hamer\u00a0<\/strong>set in 2008.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Free MC<\/h3>\n<p>Kawana Waters\u2019 <strong>Liam Schluter<\/strong> (S14) swam his way into the world record books for the Men\u2019s 200m Freestyle Multi-Class on the fourth night of the 2019 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Setting a lighting fast time at the SA Aquatic &amp; Leisure centre, the 20-year-old touched in a time of 1:54.79 to surpass <strong>Thomas Hamer\u2019s<\/strong> (GBR) time of 1:55.71 which was set in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The world record marked his second of the meet, after also smashing his own world record time in the Men\u2019s 400m Freestyle Multi-Class. With the news of his achievement still sinking in, Schluter couldn\u2019t contain his excitement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cIt felt awesome, coming in tonight just thinking about the 200m free and preparing myself for it and doing a really good time, I wasn\u2019t thinking I would break a world record, but I\u2019m so happy,\u201d Schluter said.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cMy coach said he was very proud of me and just gave me a big \u2018well done\u2019, he\u2019s very happy for me, and my mum had a nice big tear in her eye. Eyeballing each for the first 175 metres, the local hero pulled away with 25 metres to go, beating Winnington 1:46.30 to 1:46.91. The Rio Olympian had tough competition as he was pushed right to the wall by Nunawading\u2019s <strong>Brendon Smith<\/strong>, who gained ground on Larkin in the breaststroke and freestyle legs.
