FLORIDA International raced to wins in 11 of 13 events contested at the UNF Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon, defeating North Florida by a final score of 140-98.<\/p>\n<p>Florida International Press Release<\/p>\n<p>The FIU women&#8217;s swimming and diving team improved its dual meet record to a perfect 2-0 as it earned a 140-98 victory at North Florida on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers won 11 of the 13 events that took place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today was the team&#8217;s first road test of the season,&#8221; said Head Coach Randy Horner. &#8220;We competed very well and had lots of girls step up and compete well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Senior Sonia Perez won three events total on the day for the Panthers, two coming individually and one coming in a relay. Perez&#8217;s two individual wins came in the 400 IM, where she blew away the field with a time of 4:20.93 and the 100 backstroke, earning a mark of 58.70. FIU won both relay events and freshman Lily Kaufman won her first career diving event, taking home the title in the three-meter diving, earning a score of 270.90. Junior Johanna Gustafsdottir also earned two event victories in the 500 freestyle (5:06.49) and the 100 breast stroke (1:07.39).<\/p>\n<p>In the relay events, FIU&#8217;s group of Perez, junior Danielle Meara, freshman Jennifer Alfani and junior Klara Andersson posted a time of 1:49.93 to earn the title in the 200 medley relay to earn 11 points. The Panthers then closed the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay, as Andersson, Alfani, freshman Jennifer Deist and senior Valeriia Popova posted a mark of 1:38.85.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers were dominant in the freestyle events. Junior Nadia Farrugia earned nine points for FIU as she posted a mark of 10:30.46 in the 1000 freestyle to earn the win. Junior Courtyney Vanderschaaf timed in at 1:57.28 to take home the title in the 200 freestyle. Mariana de Paula (55.09) and Rebeca Bernard finished fourth and sixth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon started with the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Ana Cristina de Paula, Bridget Woods, Eva Porter and Lauren Hall were the top finishers of the day for the Ospreys, posting a time of 1:52.48. Angel Morrison, Lissa Janowicz, Caitlyn Gutierrez and Janie Kennedy  combined for a time of 1:58.85 to finish second among UNF relay teams.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Amy Taylor and freshman Kara Plocharsky finished back-to-back in the 1,000 freestyle event. Taylor clocked a time of 10:34.68 to pace the Ospreys, while Plocharsky posted a time of 10:57.38 in the event. While freshman Cara Maxwell finished third for the Ospreys with a time of 11:17.81.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 freestyle, Maria Bernard was the top finisher for North Florida. The sophomore notched a time of 1:57.59. Kennedy and Rebeca Bernard posted times of 1:57.70 and 2:01.42, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Mariana de Paula recorded a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of of 25.09, just ahead of Hall with a time of 25.63. Porter finished with a 26.13, while Gutierrez clocked a 27.00.<\/p>\n<p>The 400 individual medley saw Woods post a time of 4:37.43 to finish second in the event. Janowicz finished just off the pace with a time of 4:48.76 in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie McCallum finished just off the podium in the 100 butterfly. The junior posted a time of 1:01.71 to lead the Ospreys. Maria Bernard (1:03.88), Plocharsky (1:03.93) and Taylor (1:04.72) finished in order for North Florida.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 backstroke, Kennedy, Ana Cristina de Paula and Morrison finished 1-2-3 among North Florida swimmers. Kennedy finished second place overall with a time of 1:03.07. Ana Cristina de Paula carded a time of 1:03.47 and Morrison timed out at 1:04.28.<\/p>\n<p>In the final distance event of the day, Taylor was once again the Ospreys&#8217; top finisher. The true freshman posted a second place finish with a time of 5:16.94 to lead the UNF distance swimmers. Plocharsky finished with a time of 5:24.52 and Maxwell posted a time of 5:32.12 in the event.<\/p>\n<p>The final individual event of the morning saw Woods, McCallum and Ana Cristina de Paula finish in order for North Florida. Woods posted a time of 1:08.65, while McCallum (1:09.65) and Ana Cristinia de Paula (1:09.39) finished just off the pace.<\/p>\n<p>The 200 freestyle relay team of Maria Bernard, Mariana de Paula, Rebeca Bernard, McCallum and combined for a score of 1:41.59 to lead North Florida in the event. The quartet of Porter, Morrison, Gutierrez and Maxwell tallied a collective time of 1:45.79 in the final event of the day.<\/p>\n<p>North Florida posted a victory in the 3-meter diving competition. Rice placed second in the event with a score of 261.70. Robles (260.50), Habig (239.10), Whittle (234.50) and Chandler (199.20) finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1-meter diving competition, the Ospreys placed first, third, fourth and fifth. Fernanda Robles claimed first with a meet-best of 251.00 and Monica Rice placed third with 239.35. Morgan Whittle (236.20), Chelsea Chandler (234.45) and Amander Habig (189.45) took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>North Florida&#8217;s swimming and diving team will be back in action on Nov. 15 as the Ospreys head to Wingate, N.C. for the Wingate Invitational.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JACKSONVILLE, Florida, October 19.
