{"id":363506,"date":"2019-04-09T14:10:12","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T21:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=363506"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T18:11:49","slug":"katie-ledecky-nathan-adrian-ambassadors-for-international-swimming-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-nathan-adrian-ambassadors-for-international-swimming-league\/","title":{"rendered":"Katie Ledecky, Nathan Adrian Ambassadors for International Swimming League"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> and <strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong> talked about the level of excitement for the direction of the sport of swimming during Tuesday\u2019s conference call announcing the four International Swimming League (ISL) franchises in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky and Adrian are ambassadors for the league and will compete in the inaugural season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/international-swimming-league-announces-4-american-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teams will be based in New York, Washington and California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really looking forward to what this league does for our sport,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI am honored to be an ISL ambassador. I have learned so much about the league and vision. I feel strongly about the potential impact it can have on the sport. I loved going to meets growing up and looking up to athletes and hopefully more and more of the young kids will see these opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m excited to announce that I\u2019ll be serving as an ambassador for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimISL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SwimISL<\/a>, the world\u2019s first professional swimming league! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aKmBK3olyD\">pic.twitter.com\/aKmBK3olyD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Katie Ledecky (@katieledecky) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katieledecky\/status\/1115739595084390401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The involvement of some of the biggest names in the sport, past and present, was the ISL\u2019s greatest victory. Having people like Ledecky and Adrian, as well as fellow ambassador <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, who was not on the call, is huge for the league.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian said having a new team aspect will boost the sport and the athlete interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t have imagined it coming to this point where we are getting people in support of an amazing league. There is something special about swimming,\u201d Adrian said. \u201cThere is just something about competing for a team title that can (bring out) great swimming from athletes. That is what excites me about the ISL.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimISL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SwimISL<\/a> is doing big things in the sport of swimming and I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of it as an ambassador! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/swimming?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#swimming<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ruiTUQFwue\">pic.twitter.com\/ruiTUQFwue<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nathan Adrian (@Nathangadrian) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nathangadrian\/status\/1115742151504093184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, having some of the sport\u2019s former superstars like <strong>Jason Lezak<\/strong> and <strong>Kaitlin Sandeno<\/strong> as team general managers will help connect generations of swimming fans.<\/p>\n<p>It is a way to keep big names in the sport of swimming longer, therefore helping build the fan base as well.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cSwimming is the most popular Olympic sport and at the same time, financially, it is a really poor sport (for the athletes) \u2014 100 times less than tennis or golf,\u201d said ISL founder Konstantin Grigorishin. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cIt was a challenge to myself. How do we make swimming more interesting from a spectator point of view. You have to create a show more than watching a race of 1 or 2 minutes. We have to create some team competition. It is not about the times, just about the places. You have to win and bring more points for the team.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are four teams in Europe and four in the U.S. that will participate in the league. The format is short-course meters. The regular season will begin in October with the top teams competing for the ISL title in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided from the beginning the league should be global because it is a global sport,\u201d Grigorishin said.<\/p>\n<p>FINA is swimming\u2019s global governing body. It originally opposed the league, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-swim-off-between-fina-and-the-international-swimming-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but backed away from that stance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strongly believe in the business model. A season will help bring in a permanent audience,\u201d Grigorishin said. \u201cWe have no conflict of interest with FINA, in my opinion. The league is just for the elite swimmers. We will respect the FINA calendar and arrange our schedule accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That means more opportunities for elite swimmers to participate in elite meets around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChanging the landscape of our sport. This is an incredibly exciting time for our sport of swimming,\u201d <strong>Lenny<\/strong> <strong>Krayzelburg<\/strong> said. \u201cWe have some of the hardest working athletes in the sports world and they deserve more than they have gotten so far. It is going to create better exposure and opportunity for our athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Krayzelburg is the general manager of the Los Angeles Current. Lezak will head the Cali Condors, while Sandeno is the GM of the DC Trident and <strong>Tina Andrew<\/strong> will lead the New York Breakers.<\/p>\n<p>They will have a specific revenue to use to sign swimmers for their teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis season we have appearance money, not an actual salary cap. Next season, we will have to make the decision all together on what the salary cap will be.
