IOWA, Michigan State and Northern Iowa met in Iowa City for a three-way dual meet, with the Hawkeyes walking away victorious in each of their matchups. Michigan State, meanwhile, fell to Iowa on both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s side, but beat Northern Iowa in the women&#8217;s meet. <\/p>\n<p>Iowa Press Release<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa women&#8217;s swimming and diving team posted a pair of dual victories, downing Michigan State, 182-117, and Northern Iowa (238-61) on Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.<br \/>\nThe two victories move the Hawkeyes&#8217; record to 2-1 this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not satisfied with this performance, but it&#8217;s great to get the win,&#8221; said UI head coach Marc Long. &#8220;Michigan State is a good team, and they&#8217;re well-coached. They race hard, so it&#8217;s good to get this win.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeyes got the evening started off on the right note, taking the top two spots in the 200-medley relay. Maddie Bro, Karolina Wartalowicz, Emma Sougstad, and Olivia Kabacinski touched out in 1:45.46 to take the top time, while the team of Allie Orivs, Hannah Maher, Haley Gordon, and Elise Borja came in second with a time of 1:47.07.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa backed that up with another strong performance in the 100-back, sweeping the top three times. Bro (58.28) and Orvis (59.01) came in first and second, while junior Audrey Kumm was third in 59.51.<br \/>\nIn the 200-breast, the Hawkeyes finished first and third. Senior Karolina Wartalowicz took the top time (2:21.06), while sophomore Colleen Champa was third in 2:23.51.<\/p>\n<p>Kabacinski led the way individually for the Hawkeyes with four first-place finishes. After placing first as a part of the 200-medley relay, Kabacinski contributed a first place finish in the 50-free (24.04), 100-free (51.91) and was the lead leg of the 400-free relay (3:31.75).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Emma Sougstad continued to contribute for the Hawkeyes, scoring two first, one second, and one third place finish. Sougstad was a member of both the winning 200-medley relay and 400-free relays, placed second in the 50-free (24.10), and took home third in the 100-butterfly (57.56).<br \/>\nIn all, the Hawkeyes posted the top times in nine swimming events.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well, Iowa finished first and second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. On the 1-meter, redshirt junior Joelle Christy led the way with a 303.20, while Abby Grilli was in second with a score of 287.20. Grilli also won the 3-meter with a final score of 288.10, while Christy was runner-up with a 287.65.<br \/>\nIowa returns to action Nov. 2, hosting Minnesota at the CRWC Pool beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa men&#8217;s swimming and diving team won 13-of-16 events en route to a 182-113 Big Ten victory over Michigan State on Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. The win improves the Hawkeyes&#8217; record to 1-1 this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not satisfied with this performance, but it&#8217;s great to get the win,&#8221; said UI head coach Marc Long. &#8220;Michigan State is a good team, and they&#8217;re well-coached. They race hard, so it&#8217;s good to get this win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeyes opened the dual in dominating fashion, posting a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of David Ernstsson, Andrew Marciniak, Dustin Rhoads and Jackson Allen won the event in 1:30.35.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of Matthew Boyd, Roman Trussov, Grant Betulius and Charles Holliday took second in 1:31.48, while Andrew Parker, Mike Nelson, Tyler Nichols and Jackson Halsmer was third in 1:33.56.<\/p>\n<p>Holliday had a breakout meet individually for the Hawkeyes, sprinting to two event titles. The sophomore out-touched Trussov in the 50-freestyle in a 20.90 seconds and won the 100-freestyle in 46.34. Trussov was the runner-up in the 50 at 21.05 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Holliday closed out the meet with his third event crown as a member of the 400-freestyle relay that touched in 3:04.05. He was joined on the relay by Gianni Sesto, Allen and Betulius.<\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeyes tallied 1-2-3 finishes in both the 100-backstroke and 200-breaststroke events. Betulius won the 100-back in 49.88, followed by Ernstsson (50.89) and Boyd (51.05). Marciniak took home the top spot in the 200-breast in 2:02.94, while freshman Nick Zito (2:03.28) was second and sophomore Quillan Oak was third in 2:03.48. Marciniak also won the 100-breast, posting a time of 55.69.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors Tyler Lentz and Kyle Noser finished with the top two times in the 200-IM. Lentz won the event in 1:52.76, while Noser was the runner-up in 1:53.49.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow senior Manuel Belzer won both distance freestyle events, touching in 9:33.50 in the 1,000 and 4:35.93 in the 500. Freshman Kyle Gannon was the runner-up in the 1,000-free in 9:35.56.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well, sophomore Addison Boschult posted a pair of first place finish on the 1-and-3-meter springboard. Boschult tallied 293.70 points on the 1-meter and 311.55 points on the 3-meter. The Hawkeyes took the top three spots on the 1-meter with freshmen Brandis Heffner and Greg Forster finishing second and third, respectively, with 270.95 and 270.20 points.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa returns to action Nov. 2, hosting Minnesota at the CRWC Pool beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State Press Release<\/p>\n<p>The Michigan State swimming and diving team turned in a strong performance on Friday night at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center. The men lost a battle to the Hawkeyes 182-113, and the women defeated Northern Iowa 244-56, but also fell to the Hawkeyes 182-117.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought we great swam in the duals,&#8221; said assistant coach Kathleen Milloy. &#8220;It was the first meet of the year and for the freshman, it was their first dual meet ever. They had great travels, great preparation and then great execution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, Bryan Williams earned an individual win in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in 1:40.97. Also placing third in the event was Pat Falconer with a time of 1:43.31. Falconer later finished second overall in the 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 47.22. Williams also scored first-place points for MSU in the 100 and 200 butterfly with winning times of 49.12 and 1:50.81, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the distance events, freshman Jon Burke turned in a third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:38.49. Burke also finished second overall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.62, followed by freshman Adam Henley with a time of 4:54.00 for third place.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Alec Kandt was the top Spartan finisher in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 57.75. In the 50 freestyle, Kyle Workman scored third-place points with a time of 21.60. Also stepping up for the freshman was Sam Hiller who finished second overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.01. He was followed by Drew Goins in third with a time of 1:57.31. In the 200 individual medley, Nate Weeks scored second-place points with a time of 1:53.91.The Spartans ended the meet with a second and third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bryan Williams has started his senior campaign to make NCAAs with a bang,&#8221; Milloy said. &#8220;He won all of his individual events. All the classes had good swims. Particularly, freshman Sam Hiller had a great 200 backstroke. Pretty much everyone&#8217;s times were faster than last week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The women kicked off the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Brooke Telander, Shelby Lacy, Sarah Love and Emily Parsons posted a time of 1:47.42. Becca Berman and Chelsea Abbott gave the competition a one-two punch in the 1,000 freestyle, placing first and second with times of 10:22.56 and 10:25.74, respectively. Berman also earned first-place points for the Spartans with a winning time of 5:08.28 in the 500 freestyle<\/p>\n<p>Summer Strickler took first-place honors in the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 1:53.47. She also finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.37. Posting a time of 1:06.76, Lacy turned in a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Brown earned an individual win in the 100 butterfly with a first-place time of 2:04.61, followed by Hannah Pugh in third place with a time of 2:07.92. Brown later scored second-place points in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.45.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50 freestyle, Telander placed third overall with a time of 24.11. Kelly Delorme was the top finisher for MSU in the 200 backstroke as she posted a time of 2:11.41. Leading the 200 breaststroke, Marina Borri clocked a time of 2:22.99 to finish second overall.<\/p>\n<p>Winning the 100 butterfly, freshman Sarah Love posted a first-place time of 56.45. To end the meet, MSU finished second and third in the 400 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a really strong day on the women&#8217;s side across all classes,&#8221; said Milloy. &#8220;We were able to beat Northern Iowa and swam really strong against Iowa. Summer Strickler won the two free in a great race. Freshman Sarah Love had a very good first meet and won the 100 butterfly in 56.45, which is a great swim in October.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the boards, senior Christee Cordes secured her NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score on the 1-meter with a personal-best score of 273.50 to place third. She also posted a third-place score of 273.00 on the 3-meter. Freshman Brennan Labar finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 283.40, followed by Charles Maurer in third with a score of 247.90.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously Matt had to be at home with a loss in the family, and he was missed,&#8221; said Milloy. &#8220;But as a team, all week long they wanted to show loyalty and respect by having a great meet. I think that&#8217;s what they did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Spartans will be back in action next weekend as the women host Illinois and Liberty on Friday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Iowa Press Release<\/p>\n<p>The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team opened the season with a double dual at the University of Iowa on Friday afternoon. The Panthers fell to Michigan State 244-56 and to Iowa 238-61.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Taylor Ostrowksi finished fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.71. She also took eighth place in the 100 butterfly in 59.46<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Aftin Phyfe had an impressive debut for the Panthers. She finished sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.19. She took eight in the 200 freestyle, finishing at 1:57.11. She wrapped her day with a ninth place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.09.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow freshman Veronica Herrmann also had a good first meet as a Panthers. She took seventh place  in both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.10) and the 200 breaststroke (2:31.54).<\/p>\n<p>Senior Natalie Johnson took fifth place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.57. Fellow senior Caryn Knight placed ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.16. Junior Reva Bork had a ninth place finish in the 500 free, finishing at 5:26.17.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Sarah Kemp finished sixth in the 3-meter dive event, scoring 219.80 points. Freshman Aslyn Clingman was the top finished for the Panthers in the 1-meter dive. She finished in ninth place with 212.50 points.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers will return to the pool on October 25th at 6 p.m. when they take on South Dakota State in Brookings, South Dakota.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IOWA CITY, Iowa, October 18.
