I\u2019m a leader\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, you are a leader. But\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, before I get to the \u201cbut\u201d, you need some context. I promise you will learn what the one thing you could be doing way better is and what comes after \u201cBut\u2026\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry &#8211; we will get there. First, some context&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing, in business, a manager is involved in the operational details of the company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a manager, you focus on how to do things more efficiently and effectively. You manage processes. You put systems into place. You give feedback up and down the chain of command. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a manager, you accomplish the task at hand and you are really good at \u201cleading\u201d others to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tricky thing is, being a manager is not the same as being a leader. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut Dan, you just used the word \u2018leading\u2019 to describe a manager!\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Yes, I did. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily get confused between the managing and leading. Which is why I wanted to show you how leading people down a pre-defined path is not leading at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading people down a path is actually \u201cmanaging\u201d under the guise of leading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOk, I\u2019m getting bored, Dan. What the **** does this have to do with swimming?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll figure that out in a second. First, back to the difference between a manager and a leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In business, a leader determines the direction of the company or project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a leader, you focus on choosing the right goals for your team at work. You instill a vision for the future in yourself and your colleagues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are good at doing this because you can clearly see the potential end result. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are an expert at beginning at the end. By beginning at the end, you can back into the direction of the company or project. You can determine if the team is working on the \u201cright\u201d things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know and understand that it doesn\u2019t matter how fast or far you run if you are running in the wrong direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing, you need both managers and leaders in business. Just like you need both managers and leaders on the pool deck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My question to you is &#8211; \u201cDo you spend more time managing or do you spend more time leading?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll answer for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am telling you that you almost definitely spend too much time managing. And you probably call it leading in your head. But, it\u2019s not. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact is, that right there is what you should be doing way better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, it\u2019s a shame because you already are a great leader. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be getting better results as a coach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen, by no means am I saying to \u201cstop managing\u201d your swimmers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to manage your swimmers. You must manage them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be correcting technique. You should be planning and tracking your training regiments. You should be focused on the efficiency and effectiveness of your team\u2019s workouts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I am saying is that you are a natural leader as a coach. But, you are not leading enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You already know how to lead, and you still don\u2019t do enough of it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should spend more time thinking through the vision for your team, thinking through the vision for each individual swimmer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with the end in mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will see that this end is different for each and every swimmer on your team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will find that the fact is, you don\u2019t spend enough time re-evaluating the path that you are leading your swimmers down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply leading them down the path is not leading. That is managing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading is constantly evaluating the path, visualizing the end, and backing into a better path. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are a leader. Now go lead more.
