WINNETKA, Illinois, October 16. HIGH school coaching legend Mark Onstott has announced that he will be retiring from coaching at the end of this season at the helm of the New Trier High School swim team, and will finish teaching in June 2014 according to a press release from New Trier.<\/p>\n
This will end a legendary high school coaching career that spanned nearly four decades, beginning at Kennedy High in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1975. Since then, he has earned state Coach of the Year honors in Iowa, Texas and Illinois, and led New Trier to the outright National High School Boys Championships in 2007 as well as the public school national title in 2012 as awarded by Swimming World Magazine. Onstott was named the NISCA National Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2010 as well for his efforts. <\/p>\n
Onstott first began coaching the boys team at New Trier in 1994, and also took over the girls team from 2002-05, before refocusing his efforts on the boys squad. Onstott was inducted into both the Illinois Swimming Association and NISCA Halls of Fame in 2012.<\/p>\n
“Mark has set a coaching standard in swimming at New Trier that will be difficult to match here or anywhere in our state,” New Trier athletics director Randy Oberembt said. “We are indebted to Mark and wish him great success as he concludes his teaching and coaching career at New Trier.”<\/p>\n
