SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, October 14. LAST Thursday, one of the best dual meets in Arizona state high school swimming history went down with Brophy and Xavier battling Chaparral High at the Cactus Pool in Scottsdale, Ariz. Chaparral High’s Ryan Hoffer served notice to the rest of the state’s sprinters as well with some sterling in-season times. <\/p>\n
Brophy won the men’s meet, 98-87, while the Xavier women also won, 97-89. Chaparral actually tied the Xavier women, but suffered a 12-4 diving disadvantage to take the loss. Also, notably, Chaparral won more of the events, but Xavier and Brophy’s dominant depth put them ahead with the nickel and dime points. <\/p>\n
Hoffer, who made some serious noise this year with several National Age Group records in the 13-14 age division, helped his squad to a pair of events that would have beat the Arizona state high school winning time at the Division 1 meet last year. Chaparral won the 200 medley relay in 1:35.21, faster than Brophy’s state championship time of 1:36.50. Brophy wound up putting up just a 1:41.41 during the dual meet. <\/p>\n
While the dual meet did not record splits, Hoffer explained that he split a 21.2 on his butterfly leg during the swim. That’s on par with the top split from last year’s state championship meet turned in by Dobson’s Mike White with a 22.28. Also, 100 fly winner Jason Alentado of Catalina Foothills split a 23.02 last year as well. <\/p>\n
Hoffer also blitzed the 50 free, one of the events he now owns the U.S. National Age Group record in. He clocked a 20.47 for the win, beating the 20.67 Brophy’s Gabriel Espinosa used to win the state title last year. Brophy’s Jack Blake took second in the dual meet with a 21.33. <\/p>\n
That’s some remarkable freshman depth as state runner-up Brad Dorsey finished third with a 22.17 at the dual meet, after taking second last year at States with a 20.97. For a pair of freshmen to beat Dorsey, the top returner in the state, demonstrates just how far Hoffer and Blake could take the event at States next month. <\/p>\n
Hoffer (20.02), Dorsey (20.40) and Blake (20.85) had their lifetimes bests at the Speedo Sectionals in Seattle last March, with Hoffer’s time standing as the 13-14 National Age Group record. Hoffer definitely benefited from training with California’s Tyler Messerschmidt last year when he returned home for a semester to clean up his academics before returning to Golden Bear country with some strong swims this season already. Messerschmidt is also well known in Arizona for breaking Gary Hall Jr.’s 100 free state record.<\/p>\n
Hoffer also won the 100 fly against Brophy with a 50.57, and split a 45.7 anchoring Chaparral’s 400 free relay. Blake, however, won the 100 free in 47.13, which would have finished fourth at States last year. <\/p>\n
For the ladies, Xavier put together an impressive 1:47.83 in the 200 medley relay, which would have finished second at States last year behind only Xavier’s winning time. Chaparral’s 200 free relay clocked an All-American consideration time with a 1:38.28.<\/p>\n
Chaparral’s Emma Segneri won the 50 free in 24.01, while Xavier’s Aimee Hatfield took second in 24.06. Xavier also went 1-2 in the 100 fly with Maddy Brandt winning in 56.17 and Elise Roediger taking second in 57.21. <\/p>\n
Chaparral’s Emma Broome had a breakthrough meet, winning the 100 free in 52.19 and the 100 back in 58.04, and also serving as the anchor for the 200 free relay. <\/p>\n
