GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado, October 12. BYU continued its dominance in the final day of the Intermountain Shootout, winning all eight matchups in a meet that was scored as 20 individual dual meets between five men’s teams and five women’s teams. <\/p>\n
BYU kicked off this morning’s session in impressive fashion, as Kim Doroghian, Hailey Campbell, Andrea Grant and Alexandria Sorensen topped the 200 free relay in 1:36.50, exactly a second in front of CSU (1:37.50). BYU’s B squad took third in 1:39.21. The BYU men were even more dominant in the men’s relay, as Jordan Fletcher, Jake Taylor, Stott Bushnell and Brent Murray combined forces to post a 1:23.43, more than two seconds ahead of Air Force (1:25.95) and Mesa (1:26.05). <\/p>\n
Doroghian returned in the next event to win the 200 fly in 2:07.96, a second and a half in front of teammates Zerlynn Tiang (2:09.46) and Jessica Ampuero (2:10.38). Lucas Aquino led another BYU sweep of the top three spots in the men’s 200 fly, as he finished in 1:50.88. Rainer Ng (1:51.27) and Rafa Alfaro (1:55.75) placed second and third, respectively. <\/p>\n
Colorado State’s Cristina Bassani, last night’s winner of the 100 breast, added a second win with a 30.24 in the 50 breast. Mallory Harris of BYU was the only other swimmer to break 31, as she posted a 30.92 for second. CSU’s Tess Simpson posted a 31.13 for third. Air Force’s Michael Barnosky led a trio of swimmers under 26 in the men’s 50 breast with a 26.59. BYU’s Chad Sorensen (26.73) and Michael King (26.89) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n
Valerie McMullan, last night’s champion in the 200 free, added another win to her repertoire as well with a 5:14.53 in the women’s 500 free. Her BYU teammate McKenna Fife certainly made it a challenge, as she was right behind in 5:14.75. CSU’s Gabby Morley took third in 5:16.02. The men’s 500 free proved to be another exciting race, as BYU’s Stott Bushnell and Air Force’s Kevin Jackson were nexk and neck for most of the race. In the end, Bushnell made up more than a second on Jackson over the final 50 to take the win in 4:45.07, just ahead of Jackson’s 4:45.48. Air Force’s Andrew Faciszewski was third in 4:48.47.<\/p>\n
Jessica Shepard put CSU back in the winner’s circle with a solid 2:09.82 to win the women’s 200 IM. BYU’s Jessica Ampuero recorded her second top-three finish of the day with a 2:10.27, while CSU’s Tess Simpson did the same with a third-place 2:11.65. BYU’s Hayden Palmer just held off teammate Rafa Alfaro to win the men’s race, 1:54.06 to 1:54.43. Stephen Richards, also from BYU, placed third in 1:57.38.<\/p>\n
In the closest race of the meet thus far, CSU’s Karin Roh edged BYU’s Andrea Grant by .01 in the 100 free, 52.80 to 52.81. Valerie McMullan continued her strong meet with a third place effort of 53.24. Meanwhile, Air Force’s Ryan Dunne won his second sprint event of the meet with a 45.73 in the men’s 100 free. Dunne also won the 50 fly last night. BYU’s Brent Murray (46.35) and Mesa’s Kent Olsen-Stavrakas (46.83) rounded out the top three. <\/p>\n
In the women’s 200 back, CSU’s Yana Garvey came oh-so-close to breaking the pool record of 2:04.04, just missing it by a tenth with a 2:04.14. BYU’s Hailey Campbell also challenged the record but fell slightly off the pace with a 2:05.15. Lauren Shaw, also of BYU, took third in 2:06.67. The men’s 200 back went to BYU’s Rainer Ng, who already won the 100 back and 200 free earlier in the meet, cruised to the win in 1:53.00. Teammate Jake Taylor took second (1:54.75), while Mesa’s Justin Hastings rounded out the top three in 1:55.89.<\/p>\n
BYU’s Kim Doroghian put on a clinic in the women’s 100 fly, winning by two and a half seconds over teammate Zerlynn Tiang, 55.51 to 58.00. BYU went 1-2-3 in the event with Alexandria Sorensen in third at 58.71. Meanwhile, Lucas Aquino grabbed the men’s 100 fly win as he and BYU teammate Jordan Fletcher battled it out to the finish, with Aquino touching in 49.09 to Fletcher’s 49.25. Ryan Dunne of Air Force took third in 50.63. <\/p>\n
The meet wrapped up with the women’s and men’s 200 breast and 400 freestyle relays. CSU’s Megan Lloyd (2:23.08) and BYU’s Chad Sorensen (2:07.34) took home the final individual event finals up for grabs. BYU edged CSU in the women’s 400 free relay, 3:32.72 to 3:32.89. Air Force was first to the wall in the men’s relay in 3:05.16. In diving action, CSU’s Emily Milone scored the most points in the 1-meter with 275.30, while Mesa’s Brock Martin topped the men’s 3-meter with 290.45.<\/p>\n
