LINCOLN, Nebraska, October 12. FOR the second time in seven years, the University of Nebraska and Iowa State have posted matching scores in a meet. Today, the two teams each won eight events to tie with 150 points. Their last tie came at the Big 12 Relays in 2006. <\/p>\n
Nebraska claimed the opening relay in convincing fashion, as Jacqueline Juffer, Shannon Guy, Natalie Morris and Taryn Collura posted a time of 1:44.00 to easily outdistance Iowa State’s 1:45.56.<\/p>\n
Cornhusker Bailey Pons kept the momentum in Nebraska’s favor by out-touching Iowa State’s Karyl Clarete in the 1,000 free, 10:13.66 to 10:13.95. Iowa State’s Maria Gannon touched a distant third in 10:52.59.<\/p>\n
Iowa State turned the meet around in a huge way in the next event, however, sweeping the top three spots in the 200 free with Katie Vollhaber (1:53.93), Sarah Deis (1:54.69) and Brooke Evensen (1:55.44). <\/p>\n
Nebraska countered in the next event as Erin Oeltjen touched out Iowa State’s Marissa Engel in the 100 back, 58.42 to 58.48. Nebraska’s Rebekah Land edged Iowa State’s Kaylee Kucera for third, 59.11 to 59.15.<\/p>\n
Iowa State’s Imelda Wistey left no doubt about who the top breaststroker of the day was, taking the 100 in 1:03.17. Shannon Guy of Nebraska finished second in 1:04.91, while Ali Stearns of Iowa State took third (1:05.86). <\/p>\n
Nebraska rebounded in the next event with Natalie Morris (2:06.21) and Julia Roller (2:08.04) going 1-2 in the 200 fly. Iowa State’s Elizabeth Kleiner took third in 2:09.36. <\/p>\n
The next three events of the meet turned out to be nail-biters as all three were decided by close margins. Amanda Paulson of Iowa State edged Nebraska’s Taryn Collura in the 50 free, 23.72 to 23.78. Then, in 1-meter diving, Nebraska swept the top four spots with Anna Filipcic leading the way with 279.30 points. After being out-touched in the 50, Collura rebounded to out-touch Paulson in the 100 free, 51.91 to 52.04. <\/p>\n
After finishing second in the 100 back, Iowa State’s Marissa Engel got the better of her competitors in the longer distance, touching first in the 200 back in 2:03.81. Erin Oeltjen finished three seconds behind in 2:06.93, followed by Iowa State’s Brooke Evensen (2:07.52).<\/p>\n
Imelda Wistey swept the breaststroke events today, taking the 200 in convincing fashion in 2:21.93. Teammate Emily Wiltsie was second (2:23.65) and Nebraska’s Kristin Strecker third (2:24.01).<\/p>\n
Karyl Clarete made it three wins in a row for Iowa State, winning the 500 free in 5:01.52 to take down Nebraska’s Bailey Pons (5:05.70) and Morgan Flannigan (5:10.28). <\/p>\n
Nebraska’s Natalie Morris grabbed her second victory of the day by winning the women’s 100 fly in 57.35, narrowly defeating teammates Shannon Guy (57.39) and Bria Deveaux (57.60). Nebraska then went 1-2-3 in 3-meter diving before Iowa State countered by going 1-2-3 in the women’s 200 IM. It came down to the final 400 free relay, and Iowa State’s first (3:28.89) and third place (3:34.30) finishes were enough to pull the Cyclones even with the Cornhuskers at 150 points apiece.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
