MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, October 12. THE Florida Gators took a rare trip north to race the Minnesota Gophers men’s team in a dual meet, beating Minnesota 172-124.<\/p>\n
Florida won all but two swimming events, with standout seniors Sebastien Rousseau and Marcin Cieslak as well as junior Matt Elliott winning two events each. Rousseau was arguably the toughest swimmer of the day, winning the 1000 free in 9:12.38 over teammate Arthur Frayler’s 9:14.37 then stepping up to win the 200 butterfly about 30 minutes later with a 1:47.24 over Minnesota’s Nick Orf’s 1:48.26. Rousseau almost made it three wins on the day, but Minnesota senior Kyler van Swol, a member of the World University Games team, was able to capture the 100 fly with a 48.55 to Rousseau’s 48.95.<\/p>\n
Cieslak, mostly known as a middle-distance event specialist, won two sprint events today. First up was a win in the 100 back with a 48.66, followed by a 100 free victory with a time of 44.66.<\/p>\n
Elliott swept the breaststroke events with a 100 breast time of 55.54, a full second ahead of Minnesota’s Nick Hatanaka’s runner-up time of 56.61. Elliott completed the sweep with a 2:01.68 in the 200 breast, using a 30.52 on the final 50 to beat out teammate Dan Wallace, who was second with a 2:01.77. Wallace, a world championship finalist in the 400 IM this summer, won that event today with a 3:51.43.<\/p>\n
Minnesota senior Derek Toomey, who was the only swimmer under 20 seconds in the 50 free with his 19.99 from the dual meet against Arizona State last week, posted a 20.07 to give Minnesota its other win today.<\/p>\n
With Wallace and Rousseau racing in other events, Florida freshman Mitch D’Arrigo was able to stand out in the 500 free today, winning with a 4:26.35. At the All-Florida Invitational a few weeks ago, D’Arrigo was third with a 4:26.04.<\/p>\n
