TIANJIN, China, October 11. THE second evening of the East Asian Games featured a handful of strong swims in Tianjin with the Chinese women getting the bulk of the best swims this evening. <\/p>\n
China’s Fu Yuanhui blazed to one of the top times of the meet so far. Fu, who stands at the top of the world with a blazing 27.22 in the women’s 50-meter back at the Chinese Nationals earlier this year, blitzed the field in the sprint backstroke with a 27.77 this evening. By itself, that time would have ranked her seventh in the world this year. Hong Kong’s Stephanie Au was a distant second in 28.59, while Japan’s Emi Moronuki checked in third in 28.87. <\/p>\n
China’s Lu Ying, who is the second-ranked swimmer in the world this year with a 25.42 from Worlds, edged Japan’s Yuka Kato, 26.19 to 26.22, for the women’s 50-meter fly title this evening. China’s Jiao Liuyang wound up taking bronze with a 26.85, while Japan’s Misaki Ago took fourth in 27.07. <\/p>\n
China’s Ye Shiwen, one of the top stars here at the meet, put up an easy speed 2:11.49 to win the women’s 200-meter IM. She won by nearly two seconds, obviously not needing her best effort in the event. Hong Kong’s Siobhan Bernadette Haughey raced to second in 2:13.35, while Japan’s Sakiko Shimizu clocked a 2:14.11 for third. <\/p>\n
Japan opened up the evening strong with a 1-2 in the men’s 50-meter fly. Kohei Kawamoto dominated the sprint with a 24.07, while teammate Ryo Takayasu checked in with a 24.41. Takayasu just clipped China’s Shi Feng (24.44) for silver. China’s Shi Tengfei wound up fourth in 24.64. <\/p>\n
In the least-contested finale of the night, China’s Shao Yiwen beat three other swimmers to win the women’s 400-meter free in 4:10.83. Japan’s Asami Chida took second in 4:12.82, while China’s Shen Junjie (4:17.81) and Hong Kong’s Natasha Tang (4:38.62) rounded out the field. <\/p>\n
Ehara Naito touched out Japanese teammate Chiaki Ishibashi, 1:48.85 to 1:48.91, for the men’s 200-meter freestyle title. Korea’s Kiwoong Nam collected third-place honors in 1:50.47. Meanwhile, China’s Xu Jiayu won the men’s 200-meter back in 1:57.45 with teammate Zhang Fenglin taking second in 1:57.87. Japan’s Keita Sunama closed out a close finale with a third-place time of 1:57.88. <\/p>\n
China’s Qiu Yuhan (1:58.09), Guo Junjun (2:00.43), Wang Fei (2:06.14) and Shao Yiwen (2:01.04) completed the women’s 800-meter free relay in 8:06.06 for the win. Japan’s Misato Yamazaki (2:02.46), Nao Kobayashi (2:01.95), Mio Motegi (2:01.83) and Asami Chida (2:02.67) snared second in 8:08.91.
