﻿{"id":361701,"date":"2019-03-30T20:11:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-31T03:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=361701"},"modified":"2019-03-30T21:05:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T04:05:22","slug":"redemption-king-felix-aubock-wins-1650-after-disastrous-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/redemption-king-felix-aubock-wins-1650-after-disastrous-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Redemption King Felix Aub\u00f6ck Wins 1650 After Disastrous Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Felix Aub\u00f6ck<\/strong>\u2019s first swim was so awful, it brought him to tears.<\/p>\n<p>After coming into the NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Championships with the top seed in the 500 free, the Michigan junior, swimming in lane four in the final preliminary heat \u2014 something almost unheard of in swimming.<\/p>\n<p>His next race, the 200 free, wasn\u2019t any better.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of letting the collapse continue, Aub\u00f6ck came into the final day of the meet refocused on redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Aub\u00f6ck, a 2016 Austrian Olympian, responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/felix-aubock-rattles-1650-ncaa-record-on-final-night-of-ncaas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crushing the field in the 1650 fre<\/a>e, nearly breaking the NCAA record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to refocus,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was mentally challenging after this week. Winning that race today, especially after the first few days was the biggest turnaround I ever had in a swim meet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u201cIt was the best year of practice I ever had, then I go 4:18 in the 500 (nine seconds slower than his seed time), I was crying after the race. I was like, \u2018How did that happen?\u2019 All that work in and I don\u2019t make the final. There were hundreds of things going through my head. It was so hard to go through this meet, but I am really glad I could reset my mind with the help of my coaches and teammates. Everybody was so supportive, but I still can\u2019t believe I was able to refocus and (win).\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aub\u00f6ck won the race in 14:23.09, less than a second from <strong>Clark Smith<\/strong>\u2019s NCAA record of 14:22.41.<\/p>\n<p>When Smith set that record two years ago, he was one of five swimmers to break the previous NCAA record \u2014\u00a0in the same heat. Aub\u00f6ck was second \u2014\u00a0then was second again last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy freshman year, I got second. I really wanted to win last year and got second,\u201d he said. \u201cI felt like this year, I really, really wanted to win. I put in that work and shout-out to the distance group at Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan now has nine NCAA titles in this event. Aub\u00f6ck joins the likes of <strong>Fritz Myers\u00a0<\/strong>(1957),\u00a0<strong>Marcel Wouda\u00a0<\/strong>(1993),\u00a0<strong>Tom Dolan\u00a0<\/strong>(1995, 96),\u00a0<strong>Chris Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>(2001),\u00a0<strong>Peter Vanderkaay\u00a0<\/strong>(2004) and\u00a0<strong>Connor Jaeger\u00a0<\/strong>(2013, 14) as winners of the event for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n<p>Winning after being runner-up twice is sweet enough, but this victory didn\u2019t look possible two days ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_361765\" style=\"width: 552px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361765\" data-attachment-id=\"361765\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/redemption-king-felix-aubock-wins-1650-after-disastrous-start\/felix-auboeck-13\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/felix-auboeck-_PB50287.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2400,1800\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe 500 just didn\u2019t work out at all. Being a top seed and wanting to win that race \u2014 then placing 30-somethingth and not making it back. It is a big upset. Right after that race, I tried to not think about it and focus on the 200 \u2014\u00a0and that didn\u2019t work out much better than the 500. But there are no excuses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aub\u00f6ck credits his teammates with helping him not get too down on himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows what great teammates I have,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter the 500, I got more texts than ever before. They believed in me.
