Theall transferred to Texas A&amp;M as a sophomore and has reaped the benefits, dropping more than 30 seconds in two years in the 500 free.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview at the end of Friday&#8217;s finals session, Theall described what has made his experience at Texas A&amp;M so successful and how coaches\u00a0<strong>Jay Holmes\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Jason Calanog\u00a0<\/strong>have helped him improve so much. Theall also discussed why this meet has been a &#8220;dream come true,&#8221; and he pointed out flaws he wants to improve on moving forward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mark Theall Dropped Seven Seconds in Two Years in the 200 Free (2019 Men&#039;s NCAAs)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M3oJEv2CKN0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Full recap from 500 free final:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Going for his third straight NCAA title in the 500 free, Texas senior\u00a0<strong>Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>took the race out at a never-before-seen pace, splitting 1:35.69 at the 200 and almost swimming the first half in under 2:00. At one point, Haas was nearly three seconds under pace for the American record, which belongs to\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>at 4:07.25.<\/p>\n<p>Haas was still under record-pace at the 450, only to fade slightly on the last 50. He finished in 4:08.19, breaking\u00a0<strong>Clark Smith\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>NCAA record of 4:08.42 set in 2017. Haas\u2019 performance made him the second-fastest swimmer in history.<\/p>\n<p>In Haas\u2019 wake for much of the race, Cal\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Sean Grieshop\u00a0<\/strong>ended up putting up a stellar swim for second, with a time of 4:10.29. Arizona\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Brooks Fail\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 4:10.77.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Vargas Jacobo<\/strong>\u00a0finished fourth in 4:12.21, ahead of Georgia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Walker Higgins\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.65) and South Carolina\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Fynn Minuth\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.72). Also in the A-final were Texas A&amp;M\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mark Theall\u00a0<\/strong>(4:16.05) and Harvard\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Brennan Novak\u00a0<\/strong>(4:21.72).<\/p>\n<p>In the B-final, Cal\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Trenton Julian\u00a0<\/strong>crushed the field with an impressive time of 4:11.30, better than all but the top three in the A-final.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas A&amp;M&#8217;s\u00a0Mark Theall\u00a0has experienced a breakout meet at the NCAA championships, splitting under 1:32 on the Aggies&#8217;
