AUBURN'S Maggie Bowen and Georgia's Maritza Correia swam to stunning American records tonight to highlight the first day of competition of the NCAA Div. I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

In all, five American and NCAA marks were washed away
in the waters of the super-fast Texas Aquatic Center.

As the first day of this three-day Championship came to a close, pre-meet favorite Stanford, with 98 points, found itself behind a fired-up Auburn team (153 points), a Georgia squad intent on winning its fourth straight title (127), and the home crowd favorite Texas Longhorns (103).

200 yard freestyle relay
In the very first event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, Georgia broke the American/NCAA mark of 1:28.89 set by Texas last year. Anchored by maritza Correia, aka Relay Woman, the Dawgs won in 1:28.74, just edging Georgia (1:28.92) and Texas (1:29.26).

Georgia's splits; Becky Short, 22.42; Maggie Bowen, 22.28; Paige Kearns, 22.68; and Maritza Correia … are you ready for this? Maritza Correia in 21.22!

500 yard freestyle
Though the 500 free was the only event that did not produce a record, it was an exciting, down-to-the-wire race, with SMU's Swiss Miss, Flavia Rigamonti, storming from behind to edge defending champ, Jessica Foschi of Stanford, 4:40.13 to 4:41.10.

Georgia's Julie hardt actually won the B final in a faster time than the gold medalist, clocking 4:39.89.

In the final, Foschi led for the first 450 yards, when Rigamonti came storming back to take the lead, then held off Foschi's furious kick in the final lap. Auburn's Magda Dyszkiewicz was third in 4:41.98

200 yard individual medley
In perhaps the most impressive swim of the meet, Auburn's Maggie Bowen overtook a determined Shelly Ripple of stanford to hack more than a secon-and-a-half from the American/NCAA record she set last year.

In 2001, Bowen clocked 1:55.49, edging Ripple, to erase Summer Sanders' long-standing record of 1:55.54. Tonight, Bowen simply destroyed her one yer-old mark.

Ripple knew she had to take it out hard, as fly is Bowen's "weak' stroke and probably Ripple's strongest. She did, splitting 25.08 to bowen's 25.76, which put the Auburn Tiger in fifth.

Ripple picked up another 18-hundredths on the backstroke, going 28.60 to Bowen's 28.78. At the halfway mark, Ripple turned in 53.68 to Bowen's 54.52, with SMU's Alenka Kejzar third in 55.61.

Then Bowen uncorked a 32.34 breaststroke leg, a second faster than anyon else and almost two seconds faster than Ripple's 34.10. Bowen had the lead, 1:26.86 to 1:27.78.

Ripple was in pain on the last 50 — her fast first 50 had cost heavily — and she fought on, but Bowen had too much. Bowen split 27.03, fastest of the final, to touch in an astonishing 1:53.91. Ripple's 1:55.58 makes her the third fastest woman in history. Kejzar swam a superb 1:56.38 for third.

50 yard freestyle
The waters had barely settled from Bowen's steaming medley, than Maritza Correia, still wet from her relay swim, raised the water temperature to the boiling point.

The Georgia junior clocked an amazing 21.69 for the 50 yard freestyle to erase Amy Van Dyken's American/NCAA tandard of 21.77 that had lasted eight years.

Rice's Mandy Mularz was a strong second in 22.17, with Auburn's Eilen Coparropa third, 22.39.

One-meter diving
USC's Blythe Hartley, a Canadian import, won the one-meter springboard diving with 333.95 points to upset Houston's Yulia Pakhalina (312.80), a Russian Olympian. Indiana's Sara Reiling was third in 297.50.

400 yard medley relay
There were two American/NCAA records in the vening's final event: Natalie Coughlin's 50.57 100 yard backstroke leadoff leg for Cal, and Stanford's 3:31.74 for the relay.

Cal's Coughlin split 24.51 on her way to her backstroke mark, leaving the sven other women in the field–all of whom went 53s and 54s–looking like they were swimming in mud.

Stacianna Stitts followed with a 59.68 breaststroke split, but lost a second-and-a-half to Stanford's Tara Kirk, who went 58.16.

Stanford's Shelly Ripple made up her entire 1.7-second deficit in the first 50 of her 100 fly, splitting 51.32 for her leg to Cal's Alice Henriques' 53.76.

In the final leg, Cal's Danielle Becks closed the margin on Stanford's Lacey Boutwell to only a few tenths in the first 50, but then the Cardinal pulled away to win. Boutwell split 48.46 to Becks' 48.54.

Stanford's 3:31.74 smashed its own NCAA mark of 3:32.43 and the American mark of 3:34.83 set by Cal, both last year. Cal's 3:32.55 was also under the former American mark.

Auburn, at 3:34.53, was third.

Arizona's Beth botsford had the second fastest backstroke split, 53.45.

Auburn's Maggie Bowen split 58.62 for the breaststroke, while ASU's Agnes Kovacs recorded a 59.55.

Auburn's Demeraeso Christianson had the second fatest fly split at 52.55, behind Ripple.

Georgia's Maritza Correia–who else?–had by far the swiftest freestyle split–47.26. arizona's Sarah Tolar, at 48.39, had the second fastest.

FINALS RESULTS
EVENT: 1 WOMEN's 200 Yard FREESTYLE RELAY

NCAA Record: 1:28.89 TEXAS
