﻿{"id":361167,"date":"2019-03-29T10:10:18","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T17:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=361167"},"modified":"2019-03-29T20:06:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T03:06:49","slug":"2019-mens-ncaa-swimming-championships-day-three-prelims-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-mens-ncaa-swimming-championships-day-three-prelims-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Men\u2019s NCAA Swimming Championships Day Three Prelims: Cal Gets Eight A-Finalists, Coleman Stewart Crushes 100 Back (RACE VIDEOS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the Friday morning prelims session at the men&#8217;s NCAA swimming championships in Austin, Texas, the California Golden Bears continued their dominance and push towards an NCAA title &#8212; which would be their first since 2014 &#8212; while NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Coleman Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>and Harvard&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dean Farris\u00a0<\/strong>posted all-time top-four times in the 100 back, and Minnesota freshman\u00a0<strong>Max McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>put up a monster 50.30 in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, incredible depth in the men&#8217;s 200 free meant that 16 men swam faster than what it took to qualify for the championship final at last year&#8217;s NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>Cal placed eight swimmers qualified for individual A-finals, followed by Texas with five and Indiana with four. Cal initially had seven in the top heat, only to get one more when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-carr-to-re-swim-100-back-results-unofficial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Daniel Carr\u00a0<\/strong>blasted 44.86 in a 100 back re-swim<\/a> to move up from 17th to fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville qualified three A-finalists, while NC State, Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Missouri all had multiple A-finalists. The next two qualifiers also came from outside the circle-seeded heats, as Virginia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brendan Casey\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 3:39.02 and Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sean Grieshop\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 3:39.64.<\/p>\n<p>The next two qualifiers were also Cal Bears,\u00a0<strong>Mike Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>(3:39.70) and\u00a0<strong>Trenton Julian\u00a0<\/strong>(3:40.14). Lanza qualified first in 44.68, and Stewart took second in 44.93. While in 2018, it took under 1:33 to make the A-final and under 1:34 to make the B-final, this year it required a sub-1:33 to even score.<\/p>\n<p>Missouri&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mikel Schreuders\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 1:32.15, followed by Indiana&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.17), Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jeff Newkirk\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.19) and Ohio State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul DeLakis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.32). Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Townley Haas<\/strong>, the three-time defending champion, qualified sixth in 1:32.35.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s <strong>Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.41) and Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.42) took the last two spots in the championship final, locking out Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jake Sannem<\/strong> (1:32.43) by four hundredths. Shebat currently ranks fifth all-time in the event at 44.35, and Nikolaev is tied for sixth at 44.49.<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Carr\u00a0<\/strong>intially finished 17th but re-swam the event after the session. In that second swim, he moved into fourth with his time of 44.86.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>finished the prelims in fifth at 44.93, followed by Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ryan Harty\u00a0<\/strong>(45.05) and Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Javier Acevedo\u00a0<\/strong>(45.09).
