PALO ALTO, Stanford, October 2. THE first top-10 men’s recruit in the Class of 2014 is finally off the board as Palo Alto Stanford’s Andrew Liang committed to the Stanford Cardinal. <\/p>\n
Liang, who is ranked ninth in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, will immediately impact the Cardinal with his versatile game.<\/p>\n
Liang owns some sizzling times in the 100-yard fly (47.19), 200-yard fly (1:46.47), 200-yard back (1:46.60) and 100-yard back (48.81). Aside from the 100 fly that took place at the 2013 CCS High School Championships, his other times were posted in February at the Speedo Sectionals.<\/p>\n
Liang can also extend his event schedule into the all-important sprint freestyle as he has a 44.96 in the 100-yard free to his credit, along with a 200-yard free 1:38.39 that could line him up with some serious relay duty for the Cardinal.<\/p>\n
Liang is also a long course beast with a 54.56 in the 100-meter fly from 2013 U.S. Nationals, as well as a 58.44 in the 100-meter back from the 2012 Santa Clara International. <\/p>\n
Liang’s biggest claim to fame at this point in his career came during the 2013 SCVAL De Anza Division Championships in May as he took down the longest standing league record set by the legendary Mark Spitz back in 1967. Liang, who still has another season left to lower the time even more, raced to a 47.88 at the meet to crush the 49.10 mark set by Spitz nearly 50 years ago. <\/p>\n
“I know who Mark Spitz is,” Liang told Palo Alto Online. “He’s pretty old. I knew he was like one of those first superstars. He was like the Michael Phelps of his time. It’s pretty neat. I’m definitely happy.”<\/p>\n
