COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 1. OLYMPIC gold medalists and world champions Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.), Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) highlight the nominees for the 2013 USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards, which will take place Sunday, Nov. 24 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles at LA Live.<\/p>\n
The nation’s top swimmers and coaches are nominated in eight categories for the 10th USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards. Franklin is nominated for five awards; Ledecky and Lochte are up for four awards each.<\/p>\n
This year’s event will mix swimming stars with celebrities, business leaders and other entertainment icons in the vibrant setting of downtown Los Angeles and LA Live.<\/p>\n
Nominations for the event are based on the year’s top accomplishments by U.S. swimmers, focusing primarily on the 2013 FINA World Championships. The Americans dominated the water in Barcelona, topping the table with 31 medals — 14 gold, eight silver and nine bronze.<\/p>\n
The nominees for Female Athlete of the Year include open-water world champion Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.), Franklin and Ledecky. This trio combined for 11 gold medals at the 2013 FINA World Championships. The Male Athlete of the Year nominees are 2013 world champions Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Lochte.<\/p>\n
Other nominees include Eugene Godsoe (Greensboro, N.C.), Elizabeth Pelton (Baltimore, Md.), David Plummer (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Megan Romano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) for the Perseverance Award, an honor which is given to the athlete who came back from adversity, retirement, illness or injury. The Breakout Performer of the Year nominees are Jimmy Feigen (San Antonio, Texas), Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, Md.), Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas) and Michael McBroom (The Woodlands, Texas).<\/p>\n
More information about the nominees and the online fan voting for each category is available at www.GoldenGoggles.com. Online voting opens Tuesday and will continue through Friday, Nov. 15. A percentage of the fan vote will count towards the final ballot.<\/p>\n
Proceeds from the Golden Goggle Awards will benefit the USA Swimming Foundation, which has the mission to save lives and build champions — in the pool and in life. In addition to its Make a Splash initiative, a national, child-focused water safety campaign that stresses the importance of learning to swim, the USA Swimming Foundation supports the U.S. National Team and its development efforts aim to establish an endowment to strengthen the future of USA Swimming’s programs and services. The Foundation also serves as the home for our National and Olympic Team Alumni reunions and regional events.<\/p>\n
