Implicated are senior administrators and coaches at some of the country\u2019s most exclusive colleges and universities, including Georgetown, Stanford, the University of Southern California, Yale and Wake Forest.<\/p>\n<p>The list of those charged with criminal racketeering\u2014which carries up to a 20-year sentence and $250,000 in fines\u2014include <strong>Jovan Vavic<\/strong> and <strong>Donna Heinel<\/strong> of USC. Vavic, the former Trojan men\u2019s and women\u2019s water polo coach, is accused of accepting $250,000 in bribes. Heinel, formerly the USC Athletic Department\u2019s Senior Women\u2019s Administrator, is alleged to have taken $1.3 million in illegal payments. Both were implicated in a scheme masterminded by <strong>William \u201cRick\u201d Singer<\/strong>\u2014part of a $25 million-dollar operation whereby affluent families sought to game admissions requirements by utilizing what Singer termed a \u201cside door\u201d\u2014making payments to coaches and athletic department administrators who then gave preferential treatment to non-athletes. Founder of the Edge College &amp; Career Network, Singer has already plead guilty and is providing evidence of wrong-doing to FBI agents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rise-and-scandalous-fall-of-uscs-jovan-vavic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>[Commentary: The Rise and Scandalous Fall Of USC Water Polo Coach Jovan Vavic]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tone for today&#8217;s responses was set by Heinel\u2019s lawyer, <strong>Nina Marino<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/yale-rescinds-students-admission-in-$25-million-college-entrance-scam-\/5215128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>: &#8220;These charges come as a complete shock. Anyone who knows Donna Heinel knows she&#8217;s a woman of integrity and ethics with a strong moral compass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both Heinel and Vavic were fired on Wednesday, March 13\u2014when the indictment was unsealed\u2014by then Interim President <strong>Wanda M. Austin<\/strong>. Last week, USC announced that <strong>Carol L. Foit<\/strong> will become the university\u2019s 12th president, effective in July.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-a-quarter-century-in-troy-jovan-vavic-fired-as-usc-mens-womens-head-water-polo-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>[After a Quarter Century in Troy, Jovan Vavic Fired as USC Men\u2019s &amp; Women\u2019s Head Water Polo Coach]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Heinel and Vavic, the list of those paraded before a federal magistrate today in Boston\u2019s Moakley Federal Courthouse include: <strong>Gordon Ernst<\/strong>, former Georgetown tennis coach; <strong>Jorge Salcedo<\/strong>, former UCLA men&#8217;s soccer coach, <strong>Bill Ferguson<\/strong>, Wake Forest women&#8217;s volleyball coach; <strong>Igor Dvorskiy<\/strong>, director of West Hollywood Preparatory School; <strong>Martin Fox<\/strong>, president of Private Tennis Academy &amp; Camp in Houston; <strong>Laura Janke<\/strong>, former assistant coach of women&#8217;s soccer at USC; <strong>Ali Khosroshahin<\/strong>, former head coach of women&#8217;s soccer at USC; <strong>Steven Masera<\/strong>, accountant and financial officer for Edge College and Career Network and Key Worldwide Foundation; <strong>Mikaela Sanford<\/strong>, employee at Edge College and Career Network and Key Worldwide Foundation; and <strong>Niki Williams<\/strong>, test administrator for the College Board and ACT.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/investigations-college-admissions-and-testing-bribery-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">case<\/a> pursued by the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office, District of Boston, the coaches charged today are accused of accepting bribes in exchange for helping applicants improperly gain admissions, accepting falsified records that touted the candidates as athletic recruits.
