It once again worked as McLaughlin made the final in both events for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p>This time, it went even better as McLaughlin finished third in the 100 fly (49.97), breaking <strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong>\u2019s school record in the event. She then finished seventh in the 200 free (1:43.72) just a few minutes later.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>\u201cI saw the board and I was like, \u201849.9, Wow!\u2019 then I was like, \u2018Wait that\u2019s me! \u2026 Oh my gosh!\u201d McLaughlin said. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t know it broke the record. That is really cool, especially because Nat is such an amazing girl and swimmer, and is doing so many great things now. She is just awesome. I was really excited that I moved up into third, which was a few more points for Cal. That was the coolest thing.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her doing the back-to-back two years in a row doesn\u2019t make it any less impressive.<\/p>\n<p>She had maybe 10 minutes between races.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just hopped down and swam a little bit and re-put my cap on (after awards),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While the Friday double became the standard for McLaughlin, a feat that has been pretty rare in the sport, her success has trickled to schools around the country.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was stunningly one of five swimmers to make multiple individual finals on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, five \u2014 though McLaughlin was still the only one to do it in back-to-back events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe it is a trend,\u201d McLaughlin said. \u201cMaybe that will encourage more people to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_359752\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-359752\" data-attachment-id=\"359752\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-mclaughlin-taylor-ruck-lead-quintet-of-doubles-at-ncaa-championships\/maggie-macneil-4\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/maggie-macneil-_PB64041-e1553315367274.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1200,900\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Meanwhile, Stanford freshman <strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong> reached the final in the 200 free and 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive really? \u2026 Dang!\u201d Ruck said. \u201cI think we all train for it. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ivey took sixth in the 100 fly (50.82) then fourth in the 100 back (50.42).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>\u201cThe double is always a challenge,\u201d Ivey said. \u201cThe amount of time was better than it was at Pac-12s in the 200 free and 100 fly (same as McLaughlin). I have been really able to push myself with the training we do at Cal. I couldn\u2019t have asked for better swims \u2014\u00a0I went two best times. Katie and I talked at Pac-12s. We were there for each other and it was really good.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BfHAtb0Mb1w\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>MacNeil finished second in the 100 fly (49.66) and sixth in the 100 back (50.98). Tetzloff finished fifth in the 100 fly (50.61) and eighth in the 100 back (51.33).<\/p>\n<p>But Ruck had the best double performance, finishing second in the 200 free (1:40.37) and third in the 100 back (50.34).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning, it hurt really bad,\u201d Ruck said. \u201cI had 30 minutes in between, so it wasn\u2019t quite as bad as some other people\u2019s doubles. But after the 200 free, my legs hurt bad. I felt really good about the 200 free. It was a great race. I am happy I left it in the pool. The 100 back, I tried to switch gears as best as I could. I just wanted to race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Will the double be something that Ruck makes a regular practice as McLaughlin said. It will depend on where Stanford needs points, of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if it happens, it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the quintet proved that as daunting as a double can be \u2014 it is doable.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin has made the back-to-back an art form that others have watched for two years.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what happens with the underclassmen in the future, the daily double was back Friday \u2014 and at its best.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Katie McLaughlin did such a great job with her double last year that it became her norm.
