Friday night’s session of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships was a pivotal one in the team standings with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 200 medley relay on the heat sheets.<\/p>\n
Stanford’s\u00a0Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>and Indiana’s\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>had a clean sweep in the 400 IM and 100 breast respectively with both swimmers winning the last three titles in those events. King set a new American Record with her swim.<\/p>\n Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>and USC’s\u00a0Louise Hansson <\/strong>also clinched repeat victories in this event after both of them won in 2018. Hansson broke the NCAA and US Open Record with her 100 fly time as she did not break the American Record because she is a native of Sweden.<\/p>\n Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson\u00a0<\/strong>won the 100 back with a new American Record, lowering\u00a0Regan Smith’s\u00a0<\/strong>record that was set a few weeks ago. Nelson previously held the record before Smith got it at Speedo Sectionals.<\/p>\n Cal has a lead over Stanford going into the final day with Stanford’s two-year win streak on the line. Cal has not won a national title since 2015.<\/p>\n Stanford senior\u00a0Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>won the 400 IM for the fourth consecutive year on Friday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. Eastin swam a 3:57.03 as she led after all four strokes of the race. Eastin is also the first woman to ever win this event four times at NCAAs. Eastin was off her record swim of 3:54.60 from last year but she still finished first.<\/p>\n Texas A&M senior\u00a0Sydney Pickrem\u00a0<\/strong>(3:58.23) finished in the runner-up spot as she swam a best time, moving up to sixth all-time in a tie with\u00a0Julia Smit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Stanford picked up 48 points in the final with sophomore\u00a0Brooke Forde\u00a0<\/strong>(3:59.26) placing third and freshman\u00a0Allie Raab\u00a0<\/strong>(4:06.11) placing seventh. The Cardinal are looking for the third straight team title this year. They took advantage of zero Cal swimmers in either final in the 400 IM.<\/p>\n Northwestern’s\u00a0Calypso Sheridan\u00a0<\/strong>was up with Eastin at the 200 but was caught by Pickrem and Forde, who both specialize in the back-half. Sheridan was fourth at 4:01.35.<\/p>\n South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale\u00a0<\/strong>(4:03.51), Indiana’s Bailey Andison\u00a0<\/strong>(4:03.87) and Florida’s\u00a0Kelly Fertel\u00a0<\/strong>(4:09.92) also swam in the A-Final.<\/p>\n Stanford now has 12 NCAA titles in the 400 IM. Eastin joins\u00a0Michelle Griglione\u00a0<\/strong>(1989),\u00a0Janet Evans\u00a0<\/strong>(1990),\u00a0Summer Sanders\u00a0<\/strong>(1991, 92),\u00a0Julia Smit\u00a0<\/strong>(2008-10),\u00a0Maya DiRado\u00a0<\/strong>(2014) and herself (2016-19) as winners for the Cardinal in the event.<\/p>\n Eastin is also the first woman to ever win the 400 IM four times at NCAAs. Four women have won it three times in Auburn’s\u00a0Maggie Bowen<\/strong>, Florida’s Tracy Caulkins<\/strong>, USC’s\u00a0Kristine Quance\u00a0<\/strong>and Stanford’s Smit.<\/p>\n USC junior\u00a0Louise Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>swam the fastest time ever in the 100 fly on Friday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. Hansson broke her own NCAA and US Open Record with a 49.26, lowering her 49.34 she set at Pac-12’s earlier in the meet.<\/p>\n Hansson won the stacked final that included the first, third and fourth fastest performers all-time in the event. Michigan freshman\u00a0Maggie MacNeil\u00a0<\/strong>(49.66) was slightly off her best time of 49.59 as she finished second in the final.<\/p>\n Cal senior\u00a0Katie McLaughlin\u00a0<\/strong>had a huge swim for the Golden Bears as she moved up to third in the final with a 49.97, breaking 50 seconds for the first time. McLaughlin\u00a0moved up to fifth all-time in the event with that swim, picking up big points for Cal. Freshman\u00a0Izzy Ivey\u00a0<\/strong>(50.82) also swam in the final for sixth place.<\/p>\n Tennessee’s\u00a0Erika Brown\u00a0<\/strong>(50.38), Auburn’s\u00a0Aly Tetzloff\u00a0<\/strong>(50.61), Virginia’s\u00a0Morgan Hill\u00a0<\/strong>(50.84) and Louisville’s\u00a0Grace Oglesby\u00a0<\/strong>(51.10) also swam in the A-Final.<\/p>\n Hansson successfully defended her NCAA title in the event as USC now has two wins in the event all-time, both from Hansson. She joins Louisville’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong>, Georgia’s\u00a0Mary Descenza<\/strong>, Cal’s\u00a0Natalie Coughlin<\/strong>, Stanford’s\u00a0Misty Hyman<\/strong>, Stanford’s\u00a0Jenny Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>and Arizona’s\u00a0Chrissy Ahmann-Leighton\u00a0<\/strong>as repeat winners in the event.<\/p>\n In one of the most hyped races of the meet, Louisville senior\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>won her third straight NCAA title in the 200 free on Friday night at the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Comerford swam a 1:40.26 to run down Stanford freshman\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(1:40.37) and Michigan senior\u00a0Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:40.70) in one of the most exciting races of the meet thus far.<\/p>\n It was expected to be a faster final with Comerford sitting second all-time and Haughey sitting sixth, but it was the race that won the day with Comerford coming out on top in a well strategized race. Ruck moved up the all-time list to a tie for fourth with fellow Cardinal\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Cal had three A-Finalists pick up valuable points for the Golden Bears with\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil\u00a0<\/strong>placing fourth from lane 8 at 1:42.29. The Bears also had\u00a0Katie McLaughlin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.53) and\u00a0Robin Neumann\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.72) place seventh and eighth. McLaughlin placed third in the 100 fly not long before this.<\/p>\n Virginia’s\u00a0Paige Madden<\/strong>, who has had a quietly good meet this week in Austin, placed fifth at 1:43.03.<\/p>\n Michigan’s\u00a0Catie DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.17) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n Comerford is one of four swimmers to win the 200 free at least three times at this meet. She joins the likes of\u00a0Florida’s\u00a0Nicole Haislett\u00a0<\/strong>(1991-94), SMU’s\u00a0Martina Moravcova\u00a0<\/strong>(1996-99) and Georgia’s\u00a0Allison Schmitt\u00a0<\/strong>(2010, 11, 13) as three-time winners. All three of Louisville’s NCAA titles in this event have come from Comerford.<\/p>\n Indiana senior\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>won her fourth straight NCAA title in the 100 breast with a new American Record of 55.73 as King became just the second woman to win four NCAA titles in the 100 breast. King lowered her American Record she set last month at Big Tens when she broke 56 for the first time in her home pool.<\/p>\n King won the final by almost two full seconds, the largest margin of victory for any woman in this event. King held the previous margin of victory with her 1.73 margin in 2018. Eastern Michigan’s\u00a0Delaney Duncan\u00a0<\/strong>(57.83) finished in second place, improving on her third place from last year. Duncan moved up to 10th all-time with her swim tonight. NC State freshman\u00a0Sophie Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(57.90) finished in the third spot as she is the younger sister of 100 fly record holder\u00a0Louise Hansson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Minnesota’s\u00a0Lindsey Kozelsky\u00a0<\/strong>(58.09) finished in fifth for the Golden Gophers while Florida State’s\u00a0Ida Hulkko\u00a0<\/strong>(58.58) placed fifth for the Seminoles. There were four freshmen in the A-Final with Hansson, Hulkko, Virginia’s\u00a0Alexis Wenger\u00a0<\/strong>(58.64) and Cal’s\u00a0Ema Rajic\u00a0<\/strong>(59.43) placing in the final.<\/p>\n Cal’s Rajic helped put Cal in the lead through 11 events as the Cardinal had zero scorers in this event.<\/p>\n Michigan’s\u00a0Miranda Tucker\u00a0<\/strong>(58.83), last year’s runner-up, placed seventh for the Wolverines.<\/p>\n Wisconsin junior\u00a0Beata Nelson<\/strong>, fresh off the second fastest 200 IM ever last night, came back Friday night at the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a new NCAA American Record in the 100 back. Nelson swam a 49.18, lowering her NCAA record of 49.67 from the Texas Invite in the fall.<\/p>\n Nelson also broke\u00a0Regan Smith’s\u00a0<\/strong>newly minted American Record of 49.66 from Speedo Sectionals earlier this month. Nelson won her second title of the meet this week for the Badgers as they now have three NCAA titles as a program. Nelson and\u00a0Maggie Meyer\u00a0<\/strong>have won NCAA titles for Wisconsin, ironically both occurred at the University of Texas.<\/p>\n Nelson was the only one under 50 seconds in the final with Cal senior\u00a0Amy Bilquist\u00a0<\/strong>placing second at 50.05, moving up to 10th all-time with that swim. Stanford freshman\u00a0Taylor Ruck<\/strong>, swimming her second race of the night after getting the runner-up spot in the 200 free, finished third at 50.34, moving up to 12th all-time.<\/p>\n Cal continued its momentum on Friday night as\u00a0freshman\u00a0Izzy Ivey\u00a0<\/strong>placed fourth for the Golden Bears at 50.42. Ivey has been a huge help for Cal this meet, winning the B-Final in the 200 IM last night, and placing sixth in the 100 fly earlier tonight. She is now tied for 13th all-time in this event.<\/p>\n Kentucky’s\u00a0Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>(50.68), Michigan’s\u00a0Maggie MacNeil\u00a0<\/strong>(50.98), Florida’s\u00a0Sherridon Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>(51.03) and Auburn’s\u00a0Aly Tetzloff\u00a0<\/strong>(51.33) also placed in the A-Final.<\/p>\n UCLA senior\u00a0Maria Polyakova\u00a0<\/strong>won the 3m diving title on Friday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving with 396.00 points. Polyakova was the runner-up last night in the 1m board, behind a record setting performance from Minnesota’s\u00a0Sarah Bacon<\/strong>. Polyakova dethroned the reigning champion in Arkansas sophomore\u00a0Brooke Schultz\u00a0<\/strong>(380.50). Schultz barely squeaked into the A-Final this morning, coming up 8th in the prelims.<\/p>\n Miami’s\u00a0Alicia Blagg\u00a0<\/strong>finished in third at 379.80 with UCLA’s\u00a0Eloise Belanger\u00a0<\/strong>(378.75) in fourth. UCLA’s\u00a0Tom Stebbins<\/strong> has a chance to win diving coach of the year tomorrow.<\/p>\n Minnesota’s\u00a0Bacon (373.65), Texas’\u00a0Alison Gibson\u00a0<\/strong>(368.75), Arizona’s\u00a0Delaney Schnell\u00a0<\/strong>(368.75) and Kansas’\u00a0Vicky Xu\u00a0<\/strong>(358.60) also competed in the A-Final.<\/p>\n The Tennessee Volunteers have not had the best meet at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships but showed up in a big way on Friday night with a national title in the 200 medley relay. The Volunteers won with a 1:34.10. The team was comprised of\u00a0Meghan Small <\/strong>(24.03),\u00a0Nikol Popov <\/strong>(26.51),\u00a0Maddy Banic\u00a0<\/strong>(22.58) and\u00a0Erika Brown<\/strong> (20.98) as the Volunteers won with a 1:34.10.<\/p>\n Tennessee won the final ahead of Cal (1:34.43) and NC State (1:34.80). Cal’s\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil\u00a0<\/strong>(20.45) split the fastest 50 free ever on the anchor leg, tying her with\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>for the fastest ever split.<\/p>\n Cal swam the relay with\u00a0Izzy Ivey\u00a0<\/strong>(24.07),\u00a0Ema Rajic\u00a0<\/strong>(27.28),\u00a0Maddie Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(22.63) and Weitzeil (20.45) as Weitzeil’s anchor leg was not enough to catch Tennessee.<\/p>\n NC State finished in third place with\u00a0Elise Haan\u00a0<\/strong>(23.90),\u00a0Sophie Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(26.64),\u00a0Kylee Alons\u00a0<\/strong>(22.94) and\u00a0Ky-lee Perry\u00a0<\/strong>(21.32) swimming for the Wolfpack.<\/p>\n The fastest splits outside the top three came from Virginia’s\u00a0Caroline Gmelich\u00a0<\/strong>(23.85), Indiana’s\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>(25.62), Michigan’s\u00a0Maggie MacNeil\u00a0<\/strong>(22.73) and Michigan’s\u00a0Catie DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(21.43).<\/p>\n Indiana (1:35.18), Louisville (1:35.57), Michigan (1:35.85), Stanford (1:36.13) and Virginia (1:36.16) also swam in the A-Final.<\/p>\n Tennessee now has four NCAA relay titles in its history.
