There was always an injury or something in the way of their best individual performance.<\/p>\n<p>Until Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Weitzeil and Bilquist became Cal\u2019s dynamic duo on the first full night of the 2019 NCAA Division I women\u2019s championships in record-breaking fashion.<\/p>\n<p>They teamed up to win two relays and each turned in the best individual performance of their careers \u2014\u00a0all in the same night. And in the team race, it has the Golden Bears just a half point behind Stanford heading into Day 3 (173.5-173).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have really wanted to show everyone what Cal can do,\u201d Weitzeil said. \u201cWe have had up and down years with injuries and such. We just wanted to do it for each other and show everyone what we can do. Having it pay off \u2014\u00a0so far at least \u2014 has been pretty awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It started with a dynamic relay performance to open the session, as <strong>Maddie Murphy, Katie McLaughlin<\/strong>, Bilquist and Weitzeil broke the American record in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cal-crushes-200-free-relay-ncaa-american-records-weitzeil-splits-20-49\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200 free relay<\/a> with a time of 1:24.55.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_359570\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-359570\" data-attachment-id=\"359570\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cals-dynamic-duo-abbey-weitzeil-amy-bilquist-lead-record-night-for-bears\/california-200-free-relay-7\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/california-200-free-relay-_PB62312-e1553271679378.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1200,900\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cKnowing I can trust everyone on that relay to do what I know they can do so I can bring it home was awesome,\u201d Weitzeil said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cals-amy-bilquist-strong-role-model-pushing-ultimate-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bilquist<\/a> split a 20.87 before Weitzeil stunningly split a 20.49.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThat relay is my baby. Freshman and sophomore year, we won it. Junior year, got second. It is so great to come back as a senior (and win). I knew we had it in us,\u201d Bilquist said. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIt is a hard feeling to explain when you just turn around and see your teammates, you make eye contact, and you just know what is about to happen. Watching Maddie dive in, I knew we had it. We all feed off of each other\u2019s energy. It has been awesome.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The duo carried that momentum into the 50 free. If Weitzeil\u2019s relay split was stunning, her 50 free was a step past stunning as she set the American and NCAA record in dominant fashion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/abbey-weitzeil-slams-down-american-record-21-02-in-50-free-at-ncaas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finishing in 21.02<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It crushed her previous American record of 21.12 and <strong>Erika Brown<\/strong>\u2019s NCAA mark of 21.15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been waiting for that for a long time,\u201d Weitzeil said. \u201cTo have it finally pay off is awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the bigger smile might have been on Bilquist\u2019s face after finishing sixth in the same event, clocking a career-best 21.52.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to be in the \u2018A\u2019 final all four years, and I finally did it,\u201d Bilquist said. \u201cI went a best time in prelims and finals, and I can\u2019t tell you the last time I did that. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was one of those moments in a meet that could go overlooked, but the rest of her team knew what that best time and final meant to Bilquist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI train next to her all the time. She works so hard and has gone through so many things. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cal is in the hunt for the NCAA title despite missing the points of national champion <strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>, who opted to turn professional after her junior year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>\u201cWe just try to focus on ourselves. A lot of people say, \u2018Oh you are missing Kathleen and all of those points,\u2019 but she was more than just points. She was a teammate and was awesome in every aspect. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>&#8220;It is hard to fill that gap, but we just have to look at it a different way. It is not filling a gap. No one is Kathleen.
