﻿{"id":359299,"date":"2019-03-20T17:40:29","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T00:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=359299"},"modified":"2019-03-20T17:40:29","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T00:40:29","slug":"taylor-ruck-brooke-forde-power-stanford-to-relay-win-with-victory-lap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/taylor-ruck-brooke-forde-power-stanford-to-relay-win-with-victory-lap\/","title":{"rendered":"Taylor Ruck, Brooke Forde Power Stanford to Relay Win\u00a0With &#8216;Victory Lap&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the familiar voice of swimming announcer <strong>Sam Kendrick<\/strong> called out that Stanford had won the NCAA title in the 800 free relay, everyone looked at the board to see their winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-ncaa-diii-championships-night-one-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">time of 6:47.22.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Everybody except Stanford anchor <strong>Brooke Forde<\/strong>, who continued to swim an extra 50.<\/p>\n<p>Better to be safe than sorry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u201cI would like to say it was a victory lap, but honestly, my mind was kind of blank. I was really nervous beforehand and I think I was just lost in the moment,\u201d Forde said. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u201cI also took a three-hour exam today, so maybe that killed some brain cells. I am just glad that everything worked out OK and we got the win.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Forde went above and beyond to make sure that the Cardinal got off to the strongest possible start. After all, the past four years, the winner of the opening 800 Free relay has gone on to win the meet.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming that extra lap might have taken the pressure off the Cardinal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are able to laugh it off. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Stanford freshman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/taylor-ruck-embracing-nerves-for-first-ncaa-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong><\/a> dove in for the third leg and completely took over the race. In her first collegiate swim, she swam a split of 1:39.83 to put the Cardinal in front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it as a really cool experience, this first swim at NCAAs,\u201d Ruck said. \u201cWe spend so much time together. Being here and being a pat of the energy is amazing. I am excited to share it with my roomie (Forde).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All Forde had to do was hold that lead.<\/p>\n<p>She swam a split of 1:42.37 \u2014\u00a0before swimming the extra 50 \u2014\u00a0and the Cardinal held off Cal, USC and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Cal\u2019s <strong>Robin Neumann, Izzey Ivey, Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> and <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong> took second in 6:50.12 \u2014\u00a0one hundredth ahead of USC\u2019s <strong>Louise Hansson, Laticia-Leigh Transom, Tatum Wade<\/strong> and <strong>Kirsten Vose<\/strong> (6:52.13).<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s <strong>Rose Bi, Siobhan Haughey, Catie DeLoof<\/strong> and <strong>Sierra Schmidt<\/strong> took fourth in 1:45.63.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville\u2019s <strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong> made things interesting in the second leg, swimming a 1:39.19 \u2014 the fastest split of the night. She had the fastest split of all-time last season with her 1:39.14 at NCAAs in Columbus.<\/p>\n<p>But in the end, it was Stanford, who repeated as champion of the 800 free relay, and take the early lead as they aim for a three-peat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always talk about getting the meet off to a great start,\u201d Forde said. \u201cWe knew our teammates were going to have great energy and we were feeding off that.
