She was 57.<\/p>\n<p>Pollack won the gold medal in the 200 butterfly in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games for East Germany when she was just 15. She also swam the third leg of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-and-tugg-to-showcase-the-last-gold-film-screenings-nationwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now-famous 4&#215;100 free relay<\/a> for East Germany that got the silver medal behind the Americans in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>Pollack also broke the world record in the 100 fly on July 3, 1978 with a 59.46. She was also the first woman ever to break 2:10 in the 200 fly with a 2:09.87 the very next day in East Berlin. She was the last German to hold a world record in that event. The 200 record was tied a couple weeks later by American\u00a0<strong>Tracy Caulkins<\/strong>. <strong>Mary T. Meagher\u00a0<\/strong>would break both of Pollack&#8217;s world records in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Pollack was one of several East German swimmers in 1998 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/east-german-doping-trials-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publicly accuse<\/a> their coaches and physicians of giving them performance-enhancing drugs without knowledge. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/east-german-says-he-gave-out-steroids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doctors were charged<\/a> with causing bodily harm to 19 teenagers by giving them anabolic steroids without informing them or their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Pollack was on the cover of\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>in August 1978 with fellow East German <strong>Barbara Krause<\/strong>. Pollack was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/andrea-pollack-(gdr).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Swimming Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1987.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/swimming-world-magazine-august-1978-cover-245x327.png\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three-time Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Andrea Pollack\u00a0passed away March 13 after a battle with cancer.
