{"id":355760,"date":"2019-03-03T00:21:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T07:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=355760"},"modified":"2019-03-03T01:17:16","modified_gmt":"2019-03-03T08:17:16","slug":"cal-relays-build-toward-ncaas-with-sweep-at-pac-12-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cal-relays-build-toward-ncaas-with-sweep-at-pac-12-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal Relays Build Toward NCAAs With Sweep at Pac-12 Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cal team of <strong>Robin Neumann<\/strong>, <strong>Katie McLaughlin<\/strong>, <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong>, and <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> did the unthinkable Saturday night and took down the 2017 NCAA record in the 400 free relay set by Stanford\u2019s dream team of Olympians <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, <strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> and <strong>Lia Neal<\/strong> as well as national champion <strong>Janet Hu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Coming into the night, Cal was focused on winning the relay to cement their sweep of the relays at the 2019 Women\u2019s Pac-12 Championships. No one was expecting to see the NCAA record fall but the Bears stunned the crowd by clocking a 3:07.41,\u00a0lowering the previous mark of 3:07.61.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the race, Abbey Weitzeil said, \u201cI\u2019m super stoked about that relay. We have come together and have really shown who Cal is and we&#8217;re looking forward to NCAAs,&#8221; Neumann said.<\/p>\n<p>Weitzeil reiterated that the entire Cal team really stepped up to the blocks this week which bodes well for a possible Cal upset in a few weeks. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The hard work is paying off for the Bears, but McLaughlin might have the secret to their continued success when she talked about what has fueled them on this week: \u201cThe best thing we&#8217;ve done this week is to have fun as a team.
