The penultimate night of the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships was a huge one for the team standings as Indiana is ahead by over 100 points over second place Michigan.<\/p>\n
Indiana won five of the seven events on Friday night at the University of Iowa as\u00a0Zach Apple<\/strong>,\u00a0Ian Finnerty\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Gabriel Fantoni\u00a0<\/strong>won titles in the pool and\u00a0James Connor\u00a0<\/strong>won in diving.<\/p>\n Finnerty also made history as he became the first man to win the 100 breast four times at the Big Ten Championships. Three men had won it three times but Finnerty became the first to win four.<\/p>\n Michigan did have something to cheer about as\u00a0Miles Smachlo\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Charlie Swanson\u00a0<\/strong>started the night with wins in the 100 fly and 400 IM.<\/p>\n Michigan’s\u00a0Miles Smachlo\u00a0<\/strong>upset Indiana senior Vini Lanza\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 fly on Friday night at the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Lanza was the defending champion but Smachlo became the first swimmer of the meet to take down a defending champ. Every single 2018 champ had successfully defended their title from last year.<\/p>\n Smachlo swam a 44.82 to just get by Lanza who was a 44.90 from lane seven. Smachlo became the first Michigan Big Ten Champ in this event since\u00a0Sean Fletcher\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2013. Smachlo helped Michigan stop the bleeding after Indiana put four guys in the A-Final.<\/p>\n Ohio State’s\u00a0Noah Lense\u00a0<\/strong>(45.45) finished just ahead of Indiana’s\u00a0Bruno Blaskovic\u00a0<\/strong>(45.46) for the bronze medal. Blaskovic came in to the night as the top seed after prelims but faded to fourth.<\/p>\n Indiana picked up major points with Lanza, Blaskovic,\u00a0Van Mathias\u00a0<\/strong>(45.90) and\u00a0Gabriel Fantoni\u00a0<\/strong>(46.12) swimming in the final.<\/p>\n Ohio State also picked up points with\u00a0Michael Salazar\u00a0<\/strong>(45.63) and\u00a0Henrique Painhas\u00a0<\/strong>(45.77) placing fifth and sixth.<\/p>\n\n
