During the Friday morning prelims session at the men\u2019s ACC championships in Greensboro, N.C., NC State continued its push for a team title as junior Coleman Stewart <\/strong>posted the top qualifying time in both individual events he swam, breaking the 100 back ACC record in the process. Louisville also posted a strong morning, with Cardinals taking the top spot in both the 400 IM and 200 free.<\/p>\n

Stewart opened up the meet with a 45.18 in the 100 fly, the third-fastest time in the country this year behind Florida\u2019s Maxime Rooney <\/strong>(45.06) and Auburn\u2019s Liam McCloskey<\/strong> (45.11). Stewart will be comfortably seeded first in the final, with Virginia’s Bryce Keblish\u00a0<\/strong>0.35 behind at 45.53. Another Cavalier,\u00a0Zach Fong<\/strong>, qualified third in 45.65.<\/p>\n

Florida State’s\u00a0Kanoa Kaleoaloha\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 45.66. It took under 46 seconds to crack the championship final, with NC State’s\u00a0James Bretscher\u00a0<\/strong>(45.72), Louisville’s\u00a0Nicolas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>(45.74), NC State’s\u00a0Noah Hensley\u00a0<\/strong>(45.79) and Pitt’s\u00a0Blaise Vera\u00a0<\/strong>(45.99) also getting in.<\/p>\n

Virginia swimmers occupied the top two spots in the 400 IM, with\u00a0<\/strong>Brendan Casey\u00a0<\/strong>leading the way at 3:41.42 and\u00a0Ted Schubert\u00a0<\/strong>taking second in 3:42.59. Louisville’s\u00a0Daniel Sos\u00a0<\/strong>was the closest to that duo with his time of 3:42.79, while 500 free conference champion\u00a0Eric Knowles\u00a0<\/strong>of NC State was fourth at 3:42.91.<\/p>\n
Pitt’s\u00a0Samy Helmbacher\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 3:43.15, followed closely by UVA’s\u00a0Casey Storch\u00a0<\/strong>(3:43.28). Then there was a dropoff to the rest of the field, with Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Sam Tornqvist\u00a0<\/strong>(3:46.74) and Notre Dame’s\u00a0Andrew Winton<\/strong> (3:46.89) claiming the final two spots in the championship heat.<\/p>\n

Louisville freshman\u00a0Bartosz Piszczorowicz<\/strong> posted a surprising time of 1:33.49 to lead the way in the 200 free prelims, just three hundredths ahead of senior teammate\u00a0Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.52). The Cardinals should face a competitive heat in the final, with\u00a0Virginia’s\u00a0Ryan Baker\u00a0<\/strong>the best of the rest at 1:33.98.<\/p>\n
Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Lane Stone\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.01), NC State’s\u00a0Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.06), Virginia’s\u00a0George Wozencraft\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.11), NC State’s\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.43) and Louisville’s\u00a0Colton Paulson<\/strong> (1:34.63) rounded out the championship final.<\/p>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Evgeny Somov\u00a0<\/strong>blasted a 52.26 for the top prelims time in the 100 breast, and Georgia Tech’s\u00a0Caio Pumputis<\/strong>, the 200 IM winner from Thursday night, took second in 52.49. NC State’s\u00a0Daniel Graber\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 52.52, and also getting under 53 were Duke’s\u00a0Judd Howard\u00a0<\/strong>(52.70) and Virginia’s\u00a0Keefer Barnum<\/strong> (52.87).<\/p>\n
The North Carolina duo of\u00a0Valdas Abaliksta\u00a0<\/strong>(53.03) and\u00a0Sterling Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(53.08) took sixth and seventh, respectively, and Florida State’s\u00a0Izaak Bastian\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth in 53.16.<\/p>\n

Stewart returned to the pool to blast a 44.44 in the 100 back, moving past Grand Canyon’s\u00a0Mark Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>(44.61) as the nation’s fastest swimmer this season. Stewart also became the fourth-fastest performer in history in the event behind\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/strong>,\u00a0Nick Thoman\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0John Shebat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Virginia’s\u00a0Joe Clark\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the No. 2 seed behind Stewart with his 45.35, and Albiero (45.49) and Hensley (45.49) each qualified for their second A-final of the day in third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n
Louisville’s\u00a0Mitchell Whyte\u00a0<\/strong>(45.63), Duke’s\u00a0Max St. George\u00a0<\/strong>(46.00), Louisville’s Nikolaos Sofianidis<\/strong> (46.19) and Notre Dame’s\u00a0Jack Montesi\u00a0<\/strong>(46.33) each secured championship final berths.<\/p>\n
