﻿{"id":354418,"date":"2019-02-27T18:20:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T01:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=354418"},"modified":"2019-03-04T20:19:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T03:19:10","slug":"2019-big-12-conference-championships-night-one-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-big-12-conference-championships-night-one-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Big 12 Conference Championships: Texas Takes All Four Relays on Night One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tonight marked the first night of the long anticipated 2019 Big 12 Conference Championships at the\u00a0Lee &amp; Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas Longhorns have won both the men&#8217;s team has won the meet for the past 22 straight years whereas the women have taken the last six titles.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s meet should be no different; a race for second behind one of the most decorated teams in NCAA swimming and diving history.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s score included:<\/p>\n<p>Women:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>University of Texas 1021<\/li>\n<li>West Virginia University 650.5<\/li>\n<li>University of Kansas 613<\/li>\n<li>Iowa State University 512.5<\/li>\n<li>Texas Christian University 461<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Men:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>University of Texas 1052<\/li>\n<li>West Virginia University 947.5<\/li>\n<li>Texas Christian University 667.5<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s events included:<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay<\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay<\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s 1-meter Diving<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s 800 Free Relay<\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s 800 Free Relay<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the Longhorns were able to secure victories in all four relays. Showing their dominance on the boards, the Longhorns posted the top three scores in the men&#8217;s 1-meter competition.<\/p>\n<p>Check below for an event-by-event recap of tonight&#8217;s action.<\/p>\n<p>For full results, click <a href=\"http:\/\/sidearmstats.com\/texas\/swim\/index.htm?DB_OEM_ID=10410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The lady Longhorns opened up the meet with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 medley relay, lead by their A squad of <strong>Claire Adams<\/strong> (24.25), <strong>Kennedy Lohman<\/strong> (27.44), <strong>Remedy Rule<\/strong> (23.47), <strong>Grace Ariola<\/strong> (21.70), who put together a time of 1:36.86 to get ahead of their B and C squads who posted times of 1:37.87 and 1:39.36.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the rules of the conference meet, only the fastest relay team from each school may score points. This means that the fastest three times, may not necessarily be the top three places in terms of points.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa State ended up scoring second place with a time of 1:39.83 while Kansas took third in 1:40.05.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia nabbed fourth with their time of 1:40.18 while TCU taking fifth in 1:40.39.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The Texas men&#8217;s A squad of <strong>Ryan Harty<\/strong> (21.30), <strong>Charlie Scheinfeld<\/strong> (23.82), <strong>John Shebat<\/strong> (20.32) and <strong>Tate Jackson<\/strong> (18.81) produced a time of 1:24.25 which narrowly edged the West Virginia men&#8217;s team of <strong>Angelo Russo<\/strong> (21.87), <strong>Jake Armstrong<\/strong> (23.34), <strong>Sam Neaveill<\/strong> (20.72) and <strong>Merwane Elmerini<\/strong> (19.01) 1:24.94 who threw together a 1:24.94 for second place.<\/p>\n<p>Taking third was TCU&#8217;s A team, who swam a time of 1:29.60.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 1-meter Diving<\/h3>\n<p>Texas took 1-2 on the men&#8217;s 1-meter board with <strong>Grayson Campel<\/strong> (375.25) and <strong>Jacob Cornish<\/strong> (365.10) while WVU <strong>PJ Lenz<\/strong> took third with a score of 302.10.<\/p>\n<p>Texas junior <strong>Jordan Windle<\/strong> actually had the highest score of the meet with a 409.15, but was scored as an exhibition diver for reasons that are unclear at the moment.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 800 Free Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The Texas women swam an NCAA &#8216;A&#8217; cut time of 6:58.52 with <strong>Claire Adams<\/strong> (1:44.48), <strong>Evie Pfeifer<\/strong> (1:44.26), <strong>Remedy Rule<\/strong> (1:45.17) and <strong>Joanna Evans<\/strong> (1:44.61).<\/p>\n<p>Kansas took second in a time of 7:10.74 while WVU earned third place with a 7:16.20.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 800 Free Relay<\/h3>\n<p>The Texas men finished out tonights sessions with a bang by winning the fourth and final relay of the night. The Longhorn A squad touched first with an NCAA &#8216;A&#8217; cut time of 6:15.61, which was comprised of <strong>Drew Kibler<\/strong> (1:33.08), <strong>Austin Katz<\/strong> (1:34.58), <strong>Jeff Newkirk<\/strong> (1:34.84) and <strong>Townley<\/strong> <strong>Haas<\/strong> (1:33.11).<\/p>\n<p>TCU surprisingly got past WVU with their production of a 6:33.22.
