I Men: Stanford Juggernaut Rolls to 21st Straight Pac-10 Title

BLEMONT SHORES, Calif. March 9. THE No. 1-ranked New York Yankees — er, Stanford Cardinal men's swimming and diving team — romped to its 21st-consecutive Pac-10 Championship this evening.

Coach Skip Kenney's Stanford squad, No. 1 all season long in the College Swimming Coaches' poll and Swimming World's selection to unseat double-defending champ Texas at the NCAA Division 1 Championshiops in three weeks at the University of Georgia, scored 918 points to runner-up Cal's 708.5.

The meet was held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Third was Arizona (616.5) followed by USC (571), Arizona State (400) and Washington (175).

Stanford's point-total is its best since 1998, when the Cardinal scored 962.5. Last year it won with 844.5. The Cardinal's highest Pac-10 score is 1042 from '95 but at NCAAs that season it finished second to Auburn.

Reflecting on his unprecedented success — no other Pac-10 team or coach in any sport has come close to winning 21-straight championships — Kenney says: "The
streak is nice but I just don't want to be the coach here when it's broken. That's what people will talk about, when we finally lose.

"Look, many of our underclassmen weren't even born when this thing started [1982], so to have it extend into its third decade is kind of amazing. It's the kids who win the titles, not the coaches. We guide them and we give them the tools but they have to perform in the pool, and you can see how they have, year after year."

Kenney says his first title in '82 is probably his favorite as it was just that, the first. "But they're all meaningful," he notes. "I can't separate one from the other. I just want to maintain the streak, and so do our athletes. They're the ones who're really aware of it and take pride in this accomplishment."

Former USC coach Peter Daland, whose Trojans won nine NCAA championships under his direction during his nearly three decades at Troy, thinks the Cardinal will win next year — and the next too.

"They've got great talent and it feeds on itself. Also, most top swimmers at this level are excellent students, and they know they'll not only get a great education [at Stanford] and perhaps win an NCAA championship, they'll also make valuable contacts that will help them in their professional careers."

Asked about his team's NCAA favoritism, Kenney demurs.
"Let me enjoy this for awhile. We'll start thinking about NCAAs Monday."

Can Stanford dethrone the double-defending champs?

"As I've said before, Texas is very good and they've got all those diving points too. We'll be there [in Athens]," Kenney smiled, wearing a cardinal-colored rose in his shirt pocket.

Stanford won three of five individual races this evening, including a one-two-three sweep of the 200 back.

Card soph Markus Rogan, who led the country in the 200 back going in with his 1:41.58 against Cal two weeks ago, went a pr and nation-leading 1:40.79 — just two tenths off Lenny Krayszelburg's meet-record (1:40.59) from the '97 championships here.

Rogan also won the 400 IM in a nation-leading and Cardinal-record 3:42.76 last night, and ranks second in the 200 IM behind freshman teammate Dan Trupin.

Rogan's 200 back time is fifth on the all-time performances' list, fourth performer. On the Stanford list, Rogan's now third behind Brian Retter's
American/NCAA record 1:40.06 from the '95 NCAAs, and Jeff Rouse's 1:40.64 that won in '92. Krayzleburg's 1:40.59 is his career-best and the SC record too. (He
won NCAAs that year in 1:41.10.)

The triple Olympic gold-medalist was here to watch tonight's proceedings and marveled at Rogan's underwater technique (he goes the maximum 15 meters
underwater off each wall, then surfaces, takes three or four strokes, flips and dives again.)

"I swam it differently but his [Rogan's] technique wroks for him so that's fine," says Krayzelburg, who added he's feeling fine and anxious to start putting in the work that will hopefully result in another three golds at Athens.

"This is the year you have to start thinking about the next Olympics and I know I have my work cut out for me. I feel good, I'm healthy and I want to have a good summer so I can establish my base."

Wworried about any of these Cardinals supplanting him ss the world's best backstroker?

"Nah, these guys are really good in yards but we'll see about meters. It's true Markus got second at the worlds last year [200 back] so I know what he can do. The guy who concerns me is that kid in Irvine" [Aaron Peirsol, Sydney silver-medalist in the 200 and World Champ at Fukuoka].

Second behind Rogan was Peter Marshall (1:42.78) while third was 100 back champ Randall Bal (1:42.81) — introduced as "Bal Randall." Marshall's pr is a 1:42.38 from last year's NCAAs while Bal's time improved his old pr of 1:43.12, also from the '01 NCAAs.

The Card trio will rank one-three-four going into Athens, with only Florida's Chris Kellam's pr 1:42.48 from SECs cracking their monopoly. This was also the first time that a single school had three men under 1:43.0 in the same race.

* * * *

For the last two years, the dominant college sprinter has been Cal's Anthony Ervin, World Champ last summer in the 50-100 frees and double-defending NCAA 100 free champ. However, he lost the 50 at NCAAs last season to Stanford's now-graduated Anthony Robinson.

Now there's a new "horse" who's No. 1 in the 100 free, at least going into NCAAs, but he's still a Golden Bear — freshman Duje Draganja, a Croatian Olympian.

Draganja won this evening in a seasonal pr and nation-leading 42.82 when Ervin unexpectedly qualified ninth. (He won the consols in 43.07, seasonal pr and fourth-fastest nationally).

Draganja qualified second to Arizona's Roland Schoeman, 43.48-43.50. Schoeman won the 50 free and 100 fly.

When the gun went off, it looked as if Schoeman was going to get his third gold of the championship. At the 50 he led, 20.25-20.46. But training daily with Ervin and Cal sprint guru Mike Bottom, who helped coach the latter to the 50 free gold (along with Gary Hall Jr.) at Sydney paid big dividends. Draganja stormed home in 22.36 to Schoeman's 22.93 — and a different Cal sprinter was 100 free champ for the third-consecutive season.

Bart Kizierowski won in '00 (42.29), Ervin won last season (Pac-10 record 42.21) and Draganja pr'd tonight with his No. 1 42.82.

"He'll get better, he's not tapered at all," said Bottom. "And don't forget about Anthony. He's got a lot of pride and that 43.0 shows he's going to be
tough to beat."

Schoeman's 43.18 is just off his seasonal pr 43.01 (third-fastest) from a dual meet against Cal last month. Until this weekend he had never won a Pac-10 title, so his two golds are a good way to finish his career at Arizona.

Arizona State's Nick Brunelli took the bronze in a pr and NCAA auto 43.24.

Schoeman's initial 50 of 20.25 was fastest of the finals but Ervin went out in 19.98. When he tied former Cal great Matt Biondi's 41.80 American/NCAA
record last season he split 19.63 — by far fastest-ever. Biondi was out in a more "reasonable" 20.25.

* * * * *

USC junior Erik Vendt will never swim a sub 42 flat 100 free but tonight he went a pr and nation-leading 14:44.22 to win the 1650 for the second consecutive season.

His old pr was a 14:45.59 that got him the bronze at NCAAs last year. Trojan coach Mark Schubert says that Michigan's Chris Thompson's American/NCAA mark of 14:25+ from '01 is next on their agenda.

"Do I think he's capable of breaking that record? Yes," Schubert says.

"Do I think he'll do it at Athens? I hope so but I can't predict that. He [Vendt] looked good tonight and he's not rested either."

Vendt was out in 8:56.24 for his initial 1000 and by then had an almost 14-second lead over Stanford's Matt Sorlein's 9:09.80. who was in the adjoining lane. Vendt's 1000 pr is his 8:49.59 at home against Stanford last month, which is the fastest-ever in a dual meet.

He won the NCAA 1500 free in '00 when the meet was swum as a sc meters affair, and also won the 500 free opening night in a pr 4:16.32, second nationally.

He won the silver medal in the 400 IM last evening and has won silvers in this race at the last Olympics and World Championships.

Teammate Klete Keller, 200 free champ here and defending NCAA 200-500 free champ, went 15:02.22 for second with Sorlein third (15:10.78). Vendt's time
is an NCAA auto cut but Keller's and Sorlein's swims are consideration. However, they're both "locks" to swim this event at Athens.

Cardinal soph Michael Bruce, who went a pr 53.7 to win the 100 breast Friday and score his first Pac-10 title, made it two-for-two with a wall-to-wall 200 breast triumph (1:56.73). His pr is 1:55.85 from the Cal dual, ranking him third.

No. 1 is Virginia's Gary Marshall's pr 1:54.79 from last weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, and No. 2 is Texas' Brendan Hansen's
1:55.67. Hansen is defending NCAA 100-200 champ, AR-holder in the latter, and won the gold at last summer's World Championships in the 200.

Bruce knows he'll have his work cut out for him at Athens but says he feels confident and is looking forwrad to the challenge.

As was the case in the 100 breast, Cal's Bayani Flores finished second in the 200 and swam a pr 1:58.61. Teammate Caleb Rowe's pr 1:59.09 took the bronze and was well under the "B' standard of 2:01.23.

In the 200 fly, Card junior Dan Westcott took over where graduated teammate Adam Messner left off with his pr 1:44.21 win. Westcott's time ranks him second behind Texas freshman Rainer Kendrick's 1:43.92 (a 17-18 national age group recrd too) that the Longhorn star swam to win the Big 12s two weeks ago.

Westcott's win was the third-straight year a Cardinal has won this race, Messner having done so in '00 and again last season. Westcott (and presumably his coach too) will be happy if he can have the same result at
NCAAs Messner had after winning here a year ago, i.e., a gold medal.

Possible but he'll have to contend with runner-up Juan Veloz, a Mexican Olympian who swims for Frank Busch's Arizona Wildcats. Veloz swam a pr 1:44.95 (sixth-fastest).

Westcott led through the first 50 (23.56) but Card Jayme Cramer led at the 100 (50.50-50.57). A strong third 50 gave Westcott the lead back (1:17.24-1:17.92 for Card Matt McDonald) and a final 50 of 26.97 gave him his first Pac-10 victory. McDonald matched his pr (1:45.62) from the prelims, good for seventh. Cramer was third (pr 1:45.25).

Auto cut is 1:44.93, consideration is 1:48.07.

The concluding 400 free relay saw 100 back champ Bal lead off in a pr 43.04, third-fastest nationally and fastest here. Marshall went 43.06 on the second leg and the Cardinal was in command, 1:26.10 to Cal's 1:26.26.

However, Golden Bear Matt Macedo split a fast 42.88 third leg and now Cal was ahead — barely, by .05, — 2:09.14-2:09.19.

Guess who's on the anchor for Cal?

Michael Schumacher in his Formula 1 Ferrari?

Just about. Anthony Ervin, who strikes terror in the hearts of every other anchorman in the country.

The Big A didn't diasppoint either. Splitting 19.37 for his initial 50, Ervin got home in 22.57 (41.94 overall) and Cal had its nation-leading 2:51.08 and the victory.

Stanford's 2:51.85 was second and also ranks them second nationally. Arizona, with Schoeman splitting 42.57 on the second leg, also made the NCAA auto cut of 2:55.06 with its third-place 2:54.54.

All told, Stanford won eight of 13 individual events and three of five relays, with meet records in both backstrokes and both IMs.

Cal won the 50-100 free and 400 free relay, SC won the 200-500-1650 frees and set a meet-record in the 800 free relay.

Schubert was smiling.

As for the NCAA race, Washington coach Mickey Wender summed up the feelings of most observers (including the writer) when he said: "There's your winner right there," pointing to Stanford coach Kenney.

— Bill Bell

Pac-10 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships
Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool
Final Team Scores:

1.
