I Men: Stanford Extends Lead After Day Two at Pac-10s; Rogan, Bal Set Meet Records

BELMONT SHORES, Ca., March 8 — STANFORD coach Skip Kenney had a problem last winter that any other coach in the country would gladly love to have: What to do with backstroker Marcus Rogan?

The Cardinal dorsal specialist won the silver medal in the 200 at last summer's World Championships in Fukuoka and ranked second globally. At last season's NCAAs in his freshman year, he was second in the 200 backstroke to Texas' Nate Dusing (then pr 1:41.64, just a second-a-half off the American/NCAA record by former Cardinal Brian Retterer).

Rogan was also sixth at NCAAs in the 100 back (pr 46.83) and runner-up in the 200 IM (then Stanford record 1:44.57)

However, the Cardinal has a surfeit of talented sprint backstrokers this season and putting Rogan in that event on Day 2 of NCAAs would not not necessarily aid Stanford's quest for the national-collegiate title as
perhaps putting him in aotherr event might.

Sure, Rogan could and most likely would final in the 100 back but could he also score an equal number (if not more) points in a race where the Cardinal was relatively weak, say the 400 IM.

After a winter of heavy training, the Rogan
"experiment" began in earnest in mid-January with the Michigan dual meet at Ann Arbor.

There the Austrian Olympian made his 400 IM debut with a 3:48+ clocking, a pr and a time that was then the event's national No. 1.

Three weeks later at the USC dual in Los Angeles, Rogan won in 3:45.57, slicing his pr by three full seconds and swimming the fastest 400 IM ever in a dual meet.

That time was also the second-fastest in Stanford history, only behind record-holder Steve Brown's 3:44.00 that was runner-up to USC's Erik Vendt's
meet record 3:43.74 at last year's Pac-10s.

(Interestingly, Vendt didn't swim the 400 IM against Rogan but teammate Tamas Kerekjarto did, clocking 3:46.04 for the No. 2 performance ever in a
dual.)

However, Rogan proved he wasn't superman last night in last night's Pac-10 200 IM when he lost to teammate (and freshman) Dan Trupin, 1:43.83-1:44.58. Trupin's swim was a Cardinal record and No. 1 nationally, while Rogan was just .01 off his old pr and school-record of 1:44.57 –and the season's second-best time.

Tonight, the Rogan-Trupin show was on again, this time in the longer medley, where the former qualified No. 1 (3:46.73) and the latter No. 4 (3:48.75). In the final it was all Rogan, as the Card soph powered to a Stanford and Pac-10 meet record 3:42.76, fastest nationally.

The old meet mark was Vendt's 3:43.74. Vendt also holds the Pac-10 record with his 3:40.98 from last year's NCAAs, which earned him the silver medal
and is a Trojan record too.

Tonight Vendt was second (seasonal pr 3:44.53), and will rank third going into NCAAs. Auburn's Kevin Clements is second (3:44.26 from the SECs). All
of these three plus Trupin (who was third tonight with a pr 3:47.33) will be going against Michigan's treble defending-champ Tim Sicilianio. If the Wolverine star wins again, he will tie former USC great Dave Wharton as the only man to go four-for-four.

Rogan now ranks 11th all-time (performances) and is sixth-fastest performer and has what Kenney says is
"total unconcern about name recognition.

"At this level you sometimes have guys who have a thing about having to swim against another guy, especially somebody with a big reputation, a 'name' as
we call them. Markus has absolutely no fear of anybody. He doesn't care who he swims against. He just wants to win."

While he's turned into a superb 400 IMer, his forte is still the 200 back, where he went the fastest-time nationally (1:41.58) against Cal at The Farm two weeks ago, and that time is also fastest-ever in a dual meet and 14th-best ever.

Again, however, it was done in a dual meet, NOT NCAAs, NOT Pac-10s, just "another" dual meet, against Stanford's oldest and most "hated" rival, Cal.

Trupin, a strong flyer, led after the first 100 (51.29-51.90) but a strong backstroke leg by Rogan gave him the lead at the halfway mark (1:46.52 to Vendt's 1:48.28). The latter closed the gap a bit on the breaststroke leg with his 1:03.22 to Rogan's 1:04.88, but Rogan was not to be denied.

He powered home in 54.62 vs. Vendt's 56.77 and the record that belonged to his Trojan foe was now his.

Stanford, seeking its 21st-consecutive Pac-10 championship, is comforatably ahead of Cal in the team race, with Arizona third and USC fourth. Arizona
State is in fifth-place and Washington sixth.

Kenney said that while Rogan's swim was "brilliant," to his way of thinking the best Stanford performance of the evening was by sophomore breaststroker Michael Bruce (and that includes Randall Bal's 100 back meet record too!)

Bruce won the 100 breast in a pr 53.79, third-fastest nationally.

"We needed that swim, we needed him to step up and improve upon what he had done in the morning [54.20, jsut off his old pr of 54.02 against Cal two weeks ago]," Kenney said. "That swim and win was a great confidence-builder for Michael and our whole team. It showed how a guy who's not a superstar can still win."

Runner-up was Cal's Bayani Flores, who made his second NCAA cut (he did it in the 200 IM too) with a 54.82 after a pr 54.75 in the morning. Bruce was out in 25.13 to Flores' 25.82, and with the Cardinal team ringing the corner of the pool and shouting encouragement, the Wichita native won his first Pac-10 title (he was a member of Stanford's winning 200-400 medley relay teams too.)

Similar to last night, Stanford opened with a relay title, splashing to a 1:26.46 for the 200 medley. That ranks the Cardinal third behind national leaders Minnesota and Texas (1:26.23, 1:26.33). Cal was second (1:27.42) but only Stanford made the NCAA auto cut of 1:27.21.

Stanford's Bal, who would later set the Pac-10 meet record in the 100 back a bit later, had the fastest 50 back split (21.53). Bruce went 24.53 on the breast and that too was quickest. Arizona's Roland Schoeman, 50 free champ who won the 100 fly this evening, went 20.46 (fastest) and Cal's Anthony Ervin (19.08) was king of the anchor swimmers.

Not to make excuses for Ervin as he's still the best sprinter in the world today (thank you very much, Mr. Popov!), but he has been recovering from a flu bug and is not 110% here.

Another swimmer who was out tonight was Kerekjarto, who was top-qualifier in the 200 IM but scratched due to a shoulder problem. Schubert said he was examined today and while the injury is "minor," he'll be held out for the balance of the meet.

The Trojan boss said he expects his Hungarian Olympic team member to resume light training Monday and, hopefully, will be at full strength for NCAAs at the University of Georgia in Athens the final weekend of this month.

SC soph Klete Keller, who saw teammate Vendt "steal" his 500 free Pac-10 title, defended his crown in the 200 free with a 1:35.25 win over Trojan Rodrigo Castro's second-place pr of 1:35.78.

Keller won last year in 1:34.99 and won NCAAs in '01 in a pr, and hopes to add the Trojan rcord of 1:33.87 by Bela Szabados at Athens. Keller's time tonight ranks him fourth. Castro is seventh and both swimmers won gold in the 800 free relay when the Trojans won in a meet-record 6:24.77 — third-fastest.

Schoeman's 100 fly title (46.86) was his second of the meet and second of his four-year career at Arizona. His pr is a 46.53 from last year's NCAAs, where he was third to Texas' Ian Crocker and Nate Dusing. The latter has graduated but Crocker's just a sophomore and ranks No. 1 with his 46.23 from the American short course champs.

Has Schoeman suddenly found the way to win?

"He's known all along, it's just a case of putting his talent to work and swimming smart," ays Arizona coach Frank Busch.

Runner-up was Stanford's Peter Marshall (47.18), and he was fourth last season in a pr 46.82. Marshall also helped push teammate Bal to a Pac-10 meet-record 46.35 in the 100 back a few events later with his runner-up 46.73.

Marshall went a nation-leading 45.61 100 back against Cal. That swim is sixth-best performance in history (third performer) and fastest ever in a dual-meet. Former Texas star Neil Walker, who last night at the
All-Amerioca Invitational in Austin tied ex-Cardinal Dod Wales' American record in the 100 fly (45.89), also holds the AR/NCAA record in the 100 back — 44.92 leading off the Longhorns' 400 medley relay at NCAAs in Minneapolis five years ago.

Bal's winning time tonight (46.35) is his pr and breaks the old meet record of 46.50 by Retterer from 11 years ago, as due to the Olympic year ('92) the
Pac-10 held its '92 meet here in November of '91. They've never done that again, incidentally, and they're the only conference to have ever done so.

Retterer was a freshman that season and teammate Jeff Rouse won NCAAs. By the time Retterer was a senior in '95, he would win both backstrokes and set then AR/NCAA records of 45.43-1:40.06 that are still Stanford and Pac-10 standards. His 200 record is also the existing AR.

On the 3-meter board, Arizona senior Omar Ojeda, last season's NCAA runner-up, was first with 372.75 points.

— Bill Bell

Team Scores After Day 2
Pac-10 Men's Swimming and Diving

1.
