﻿{"id":353384,"date":"2019-02-22T21:13:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-23T04:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=353384"},"modified":"2019-02-22T21:13:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-23T04:13:28","slug":"2019-gliac-championships-day-3-wayne-state-closing-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-gliac-championships-day-3-wayne-state-closing-in\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 GLIAC Championships Day 3: Wayne State Closing In"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>By Olivia Wile, Swimming World Intern.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Day three of the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) Championship brought the excitement with a third individual title for both Grand Valley State Junior <strong>Melina Goebel<\/strong> and Northern Michigan University Junior <strong>Rachel Helm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wayne State University also continued their record-breaking trend in the men&#8217;s 100 breastroke.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s event lineup included the 500 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 fly and 800 free relay.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gliac.org\/tournaments\/swimdive\/2018-19\/index\">Meet Landings Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2019-gliac-championships-day-3\/ncaa-college\/2019\/February\/22?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fncaa-college%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\">Day 3 Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gliac.org\/tournaments\/swimdive\/2018-19\/Blueframe\">Live Stream<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 500 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Not only did Grand Valley State University Junior\u00a0<strong>Melina Goebel<\/strong> claim her third individual win this evening, but she also set a new meet record in the women&#8217;s 500. Goebel cruised to first with a record-breaking time of 4:51.96. According to the College Swimming database, this is a best time by over three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Under the five minute mark as well was Wayne State Senior <strong>Emily\u00a0Marginean<\/strong>, not far behind Goebel with a 4:53.92.<\/p>\n<p>Saginaw Valley State University Senior <strong>Alexandra\u00a0Davis<\/strong> finished third with a time of 5:00.49, Wayne State Senior <strong>Ellie Dean<\/strong> claimed fourth (5:01.35) with Grand Valley Senior <strong>Megan\u00a0Shaughnessy<\/strong> getting to the wall fifth (5:02.02).<\/p>\n<p>Joining her Grand Valley teammate was Senior <strong>Caroline\u00a0Brereton<\/strong> finishing sixth (5:03.20).<\/p>\n<p>The youngest in the bunch, Northern Michigan and Wayne State Sophomore&#8217;s <strong>Lena Soulas<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Sophia\u00a0Montesanti\u00a0<\/strong>finished seventh and eighth. Soulas got to the wall at a time of 5:05.93 with Montesanti following with a 5:09.01.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 500 Free<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">It was a two-second drop from prelims that helped Wayne State Junior <strong>Ahmed Ahmed<\/strong> claim first in the men&#8217;s 500 with a time of 4:27.46.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Close behind and under 4:30 were Grand Valley Freshman <strong>Jesse Goodyear<\/strong> and Northern Michigan Senior\u00a0<strong>Grantas Dapkus.\u00a0<\/strong>Goodyear finished second (4:29.29) while Dapkus finished third (4:29.74).<\/p>\n<p>Still competing with the field was Ashland University Senior <strong>Lucas\u00a0Cortini Oliveira<\/strong> finishing fourth with a time of 4:30.36.<\/p>\n<p>Dropping from prelims and coming in fifth was Wayne State Junior <strong>Leonardo de Oliveira\u00a0<\/strong>with a time of 4:32.28. Not far behind him was <strong>Janne Roovers<\/strong> of Northern Michigan finishing sixth (4:32.50).<\/p>\n<p>Grand Valley Sophomore <strong>Moritz Bartels<\/strong> got to the wall seventh (4:36.37), while Freshman <strong>Franci Aleski<\/strong> of Ashland finished eighth (4:37.53).<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Back<\/h3>\n<p>It was another <strong>Rachel Helm<\/strong>\u00a0show tonight, but this time in the women&#8217;s 100 back. The Northern Michigan junior dropped a bit from prelims finishing first with a time of 54.35.<\/p>\n<p>Close behind in the 55 range was Wayne State Junior <strong>Ashen Michalski<\/strong> as well as Northern Michigan Senior\u00a0<strong>Regan Kilburn<\/strong>.\u00a0Michalski got to the wall second (55.18), while Kilburn finished third (55.29).<\/p>\n<p>Finishing next and just missing the 55 mark was Wayne State Junior <strong>Katherine Svisco<\/strong> with a time of 56.09.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Melina De Cort<\/strong> of Grand Valley and Senior <strong>Amanda Thielen<\/strong> of Saginaw battled it out for fifth and sixth finishing .05 apart. De Court claimed fifth with a time of 56.34 with Theielen finishing sixth (56.39).<\/p>\n<p>Grand Valley Sophomore <strong>Freyja Garbaccio<\/strong> finished seventh (56.90), while teammate\u00a0<strong>Meda Kulbaciauskaite<\/strong> finished eighth (56.95).<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Back<\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Grand Valley Junior <strong>Harry Shalamon<\/strong> brought another victory to his team finishing first with a time of 46.82.<\/p>\n<p>Coming in second was Wayne State Senior <strong>Dmytro Drobnych<\/strong> with a time of 47.23. Close to him was Northern Michigan Senior <strong>Renars Bundizs<\/strong>\u00a0finishing third (47.36).\u00a0Also in the 47 range was was Wayne State Sophomore <strong>Franz Mueller<\/strong> getting to the wall next at a 47.81.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Michigan Junior\u00a0<strong>Lajos Budai c<\/strong>laimed fifth (48.31) while Grand Valley Freshman <strong>Noah Ellis<\/strong> made his first finals appearance finishing sixth (49.61).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joshua Cosgrove<\/strong>, a Northern Michigan senior, claimed seventh (49.78) with Grand Valley Sophomore\u00a0<strong>Joseph Zlotnick<\/strong> taking eighth (52.88).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Breastroke<\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Coming out on top after a fourth-place prelims finish was Wayne State Sophomore\u00a0<strong>Jia Yi Koh<\/strong>. Yi Koh finished with a time of 1:02.71.<\/p>\n<p>Getting to the wall next and also moving up from prelims with a time of 1:03.62 was Grand Valley Freshman\u00a0<strong>Samantha Laurich<\/strong>. Her teammates Seniors\u00a0<strong>Ceila Hoag<\/strong> and <strong>Lara Diebel<\/strong> battled it out for third and fourth. Hoag finished third with a time of 1:03.83 with Diebel close behind at a 1:03.86.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking up the Grand Valley run was Northern Michigan Senior\u00a0<strong>Dana Stroven<\/strong> getting to the wall fifth (1:04.45). Just missing the 1:04 mark was teammate <strong>Briana Arnold<\/strong> finishing sixth (1:05.05).<\/p>\n<p>Close behind and finishing seventh with a time of 1:05.10 was Saginaw Valley Senior\u00a0<strong>Lydia Mattar<\/strong>. Grand Valley&#8217;s <strong>Hannah Richard<\/strong> finished eighth (106.14).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Breastroke<\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Adding to the Wayne State record-breaking and joining his teammate in winning the 100 breast was Junior\u00a0 <strong>Sasha Palazzo<\/strong>. He got to the wall with a new meet record time of 52.26<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Second, third and fourth went to the Grand Valley men. Senior\u00a0<strong>Marius Mikalauskas<\/strong> finished second (54.47), Senior <strong>Jonathan Ham<\/strong> took third (55.17) and Freshman <strong>Keegan<\/strong> <strong>Hawkins<\/strong> claimed fourth (55.27).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Answering the Grand Valley men was Northern Michigan finishing fifth, sixth and seventh. Senior\u00a0<strong>Lars Lindberg<\/strong> got to the wall fifth with a time of 55.30. Next and still in the 55 range was Senior\u00a0<strong>Arnoldo Herrera<\/strong> finishing sixth (55.78) while Freshman <strong>Lukas Bauer<\/strong> finished seventh (56.06).<\/p>\n<p>Grand Valley Junior <strong>Ahmed Nabih<\/strong> finished eighth with a time of 56.70.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Butterfly<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Keeping up the Wayne State momentum was Sophomore\u00a0<strong>Haley Groteler<\/strong> winning the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.47. Grand Valley&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mercedes Martinez<\/strong> was close behind, touching the wall second with a time of 2:04.75. Both women went to West Ottawa High School in Holland, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Michigan Senior <strong>Emily Bell<\/strong> claimed third with a time of 2:05.34 with teammate <strong>Gabriella Spajic<\/strong> close behind at a 2:05.63.<\/p>\n<p>All in the 2:07 range were Wayne State Freshman <strong>Julia Brunner<\/strong> and Grand Valley Sophomores\u00a0<strong>Freyja Garbaccio<\/strong> and<strong>\u00a0Abigail Sauerbrei<\/strong>. Brunner claimed fifth with a time of 2:07.00, Garbaccio finished sixth at 2:07.45 with\u00a0Sauerbrei finishing seventh (2:07.75).<\/p>\n<p>Ashland Sophomore<strong> Anne Evans<\/strong> made her first finals appearance of the meet finishing eighth with a time of 2:11.14.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 Butterfly<\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Grand Valley Sophomore <strong>Oscar Saura\u00a0Armengol<\/strong> claimed his second 2019 GLIAC Championship win this evening. He finished first with a time of 1:47.40.\u00a0Wayne State Senior\u00a0<strong>Rasmus Olsen<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t far behind with a time of 1:47.97, placing him second.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Miranda<\/strong> of Northern Michigan cruised to third with a time of 1:48.64. Wayne State Junior\u00a0<strong>Joao Ribeiro<\/strong> and Northern Michigan Senior <strong>Ryan Leonard<\/strong> both finished in the 1:49 mark.\u00a0Ribeiro took fourth (1:49.70) with Leonard taking fifth (1:49.96).<\/p>\n<p>St. Cloud State teammates Seniors\u00a0<strong>Robert Leigh<\/strong> and <strong>Jose Alamo<\/strong> picked up sixth (1:52.73) and seventh (1:53.47).\u00a0Not far behind was Junior <strong>Jayden Hutchinson<\/strong> of Saginaw Valley finishing eighth (1:53.85).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 800 Free<\/h3>\n<p>The Wayne State women added to another team relay win this evening. Getting to the wall first with a time of 7:29.64 was the team of <strong>Emily Marginean<\/strong>, <strong>Ashlen Michalski<\/strong>, <strong>Jia Yi Koh<\/strong> and <strong>Lezlie Bueno Estrada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Getting to the wall second was the Grand Valley team of<strong> Lara Deibel<\/strong>,<strong> Sidney Weaver<\/strong>, <strong>Allison Wells<\/strong> and <strong>Melina Goebel<\/strong>. The women swam a time of 7:36.58.<\/p>\n<p>Claiming third in the event were the Saginaw Valley State women. The team of <strong>Amanda Thielen<\/strong>, <strong>Erin McDowell<\/strong>, <strong>Sydney Shipps<\/strong> and <strong>Alexandra Davis<\/strong> finished with a 7:43.67.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 800 Free<\/h3>\n<p>The Northern Michigan team of <strong>Jonas Reinhold<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Busse<\/strong>, <strong>Grantas Dapkus<\/strong> and <strong>Lajos Bundai<\/strong> claimed the first place relay finish tonight with a time of 6:38.57.\u00a0Grand Valley finished next with a time of 6:41.60. Teaming up for the race was\u00a0<strong>Oscar Saura\u00a0Armengol,\u00a0Daniel Mullen,<\/strong> <strong>Ahmed Nabih<\/strong> and <strong>Keegan Hawkins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Though falling to third, the Wayne State team of<strong> Joao Ribeiro<\/strong>, <strong>Ahmed Ahmed<\/strong>, <strong>Kyle Lovas<\/strong> and <strong>Franz Mueller<\/strong> gave the Lakers a good race, clocking in at a 6:42.76.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Olivia Wile, Swimming World Intern.
