THE first day of competition has been completed at the 2002 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Aquatic Center. Defending champion Eastern Michigan holds a 16-point lead over Miami (OH) for first-place. Toledo is a strong third.<\/p>\n<p>TEAM SCORES (end 1st Day)<\/p>\n<p>1. Eastern Michigan 247<br \/>\n2. Miami 231<br \/>\n3. Toledo 194<br \/>\n4. Northern Illinois 127<br \/>\n5. Ohio 104<br \/>\n6. Ball State 85<br \/>\n7. Bowling Green 58<br \/>\n8. Buffalo 24<\/p>\n<p>200 FREESTYLE RELAY:<br \/>\nThe Toledo team of Pierre Van Zyl, Paul Southey, Patrik Johansson and Steve Hnatiuk won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.74. Eastern Michigan came in second (1:22.16) and Miami took third (1:22.97).<\/p>\n<p>500 FREESTYLE:<br \/>\nMiami senior John Carroll won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:26.81. Carroll won the event last year with a time of 4:28.39. Eastern Michigan senior Mathew Ense took second (4:29.01) and Nothern Illinois senior Andras Schonek finished third (4:29.20).<\/p>\n<p>200 IM:<br \/>\nMiami senior Eric DiSalle on the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.04. DiSalle won the event last year with a time of 1:49.67.  Eastern Michigan junior Justin Breitigam finished second (1:50.49) and RedHawks&#39; sophomore Brad Bartel took third (1:51.64).<\/p>\n<p>50 FREESTYLE:<br \/>\nToledo junior Pierre Van Zyl won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.44. Eastern Michigan took second and third place. Eagles&#39; junior Jeff Luhn touched the wall in 20.47 and David Vanlier touched in 20.51.<\/p>\n<p>ONE-METER DIVING:<br \/>\nOhio sophomore Robert Keichbaum (Delaware) set a new MAC record in the one-meter dive with a score of 298.00. The previous record of 296.40 was set by Miami&#39;s Dylan Nichols in today&#39;s preliminaries. Nichols finished third in the finals (297.05) behind teammate Peter Donohue (297.80).<\/p>\n<p>400 MEDLEY RELAY:<br \/>\nEastern Michigan&#39;s team of Kevin Doak, John Bartlet, Jeff Luhn and David Vanlier won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:18.95.
