Friday morning’s session of the 2019 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships was a pivotal one for the team race. Virginia came up huge with ten A-Final swims on Friday morning while NC State had nine and Louisville had seven.<\/p>\n
NC State has the top four spots in the 400 IM and Virginia also had four in the 200 free. Virginia will have top seeds in the 100 fly with\u00a0Morgan Hill<\/strong>, the 200 free with\u00a0Paige Madden\u00a0<\/strong>and the 100 back with Megan Moroney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n NC State has the top seed in the 400 IM with\u00a0Makayla Sargent<\/strong> and the 100 breast with\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Virginia’s\u00a0Morgan Hill\u00a0<\/strong>got the morning started with a 51.35 to lead the 100 fly heats on Friday morning at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. Hill is ahead of a stacked field that includes freshman sensation\u00a0Kylee Alons\u00a0<\/strong>of NC State (51.69), Louisville junior Grace Oglesby\u00a0<\/strong>(51.72) and Duke junior\u00a0Alyssa Marsh\u00a0<\/strong>(51.87).<\/p>\n Marsh had the fastest 50 fly split on the 200 medley relay on Wednesday night as she comes in with the fourth seed for finals. Oglesby had the fastest entry time so she could be the favorite tonight in the final.<\/p>\n Duke’s\u00a0Kylie Jordan\u00a0<\/strong>(52.16), Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Joelle Vereb\u00a0<\/strong>(52.17), Virginia’s\u00a0Anna Pang\u00a0<\/strong>(52.37) and Notre Dame’s\u00a0Nicole Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(52.57) also qualified for the final.<\/p>\n NC State came out swinging in the 400 IM heats on Friday morning at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro as they will have the four center lanes in the final tonight. Junior\u00a0Makayla Sargent\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.51), sophomore\u00a0Kate Moore\u00a0<\/strong>(4:08.65), freshman\u00a0Emma Muzzy\u00a0<\/strong>(4:09.70) and sophomore Julia Poole\u00a0<\/strong>(4:10.34) put up the four fastest time in the event this morning.<\/p>\n NC State did the same thing last night in the 200 IM, but Poole was the only one to make it back in both. Moore did the 500 last night and both Sargent and Muzzy had their first official swims today.<\/p>\n Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Reka Gyorgy\u00a0<\/strong>is the highest seeded swimmer outside of NC State as she is fifth at 4:11.75. She is the defending champion so she has a chance to win from lane 2 tonight as she was a 4:04 last year.<\/p>\n Louisville’s\u00a0Sophie Cattermole\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.09), Notre Dame’s\u00a0Luciana Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.60) and Pittsburgh’s\u00a0Sarah Giamber\u00a0<\/strong>(4:13.45) also placed in the top eight.<\/p>\n Virginia’s\u00a0Paige Madden\u00a0<\/strong>is on top of the 200 free heats on Friday morning at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro with a 1:43.96 heat swim. She is ahead of a stacked field that includes Notre Dame’s\u00a0Abbie Dolan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.19), Virginia’s\u00a0Megan Moroney\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.25) and Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.38).<\/p>\n Comerford won the 500 last night with a nation-leading time of 4:34.63 as she cruised to the fourth seed this morning in the 200 free, an event where she has the ACC meet and conference record. Comerford did the same thing yesterday in the 500 where she cruised in the morning and put it all out there in the finals. Madden was second last night in the 500 after having the top time in the prelims.<\/p>\n Virginia had four total swimmers in the A-Final with Madden, Moroney,\u00a0Kyla Valls\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.66) and\u00a0Eryn Eddy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.91). Madden, Moroney and Eddy swam on Virginia’s winning 800 free relay on Wednesday that broke the ACC meet record in the event.\u00a0Morgan Hill\u00a0<\/strong>was the fourth swimmer on the relay as she swam the 100 fly instead.<\/p>\n Louisville’s\u00a0Arina Openysheva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.91) and Georgia Tech’s\u00a0Iris Wang\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.13) also qualified for the final.<\/p>\n Louisville fired back in the 100 breast heats as they had three swimmers advance to the championship final on Friday morning at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro. Freshmen\u00a0Kayla Wheeler\u00a0<\/strong>(59.75) and sophomores\u00a0Mariia Astashkina\u00a0<\/strong>(59.85) and\u00a0Morgan Friesen\u00a0<\/strong>(59.98) qualified for the final for Louisville.<\/p>\n What is even more impressive though is that five freshmen advanced to the A-Final. NC State’s\u00a0Sophie Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>(57.95), Florida State’s\u00a0Ida Hulkko\u00a0<\/strong>(59.35), Virginia’s\u00a0Alexis Wenger\u00a0<\/strong>(59.70), Louisville’s\u00a0Wheeler (59.75) and Florida State’s Ida Hulkko\u00a0<\/strong>(59.35) qualified for the final as freshmen.<\/p>\n Sophomore Olivia Calegan\u00a0<\/strong>(59.84) qualified for the final in fifth.<\/p>\n Virginia ended the morning with three total swimmers reaching the A-Final with\u00a0Megan Moroney\u00a0<\/strong>(51.83) leading the way on Friday morning at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro.<\/p>\n Moroney will be joined in the final by sophomores\u00a0Marcella Maguire\u00a0<\/strong>(52.08) and\u00a0Caroline Gmelich\u00a0<\/strong>(52.45) as they placed third and fifth respectively.<\/p>\n The top seed coming into the meet was NC State senior\u00a0Elise Haan\u00a0<\/strong>(51.97) and she is the second seed.<\/p>\n Duke’s\u00a0Alyssa Marsh\u00a0<\/strong>(52.23), Notre Dame’s\u00a0Carly Quast\u00a0<\/strong>(52.49), Duke’s\u00a0Madeline Hess\u00a0<\/strong>(52.92) and NC State’s\u00a0Emma Muzzy\u00a0<\/strong>(52.93) also qualified for the final.<\/p>\n Friday morning’s session of the 2019 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships was a pivotal one for the team race.
