IT was a remarkable evening of firsts on the first evening of the 2002 Pac-10 men's Championship at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Arizona senior Roland Schoeman, who holds the NCAA record in the 50 free with his 19.07 from three years ago, won his first conference title.

Stanford freshman Dan Trupin defeated teammate and defending champ Markus Rogan to win the 200 IM in a Stanford/Pac-10 record and nation-leading time.

USC junior Erik Vendt defeated teammate and defending Pac-10/NCAA champ Klete Keller in the 500 free for his first 500 title (he won the 1650 as a freshman).

And Stanford went a Pac-10 and nation-leading time to win the 400 medley relay.

Aside from that, it was a pretty routine opening-day (night).

Stanford got the proceedings off to a quick start when the Cardinal clocked a nation-leading 1:17.24 to win the 200 free relay, with Cal a tick behind (1:17.73) in the No. 2 national clocking.

Stanford junior Randal Bal led off in 19.51, quickest leadoff of the race and just off his pr 19.46. That swim was done a couple of weeks ago at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Complex, and it tied the him with Cal's Anthony Ervin for the 50 title during the Stanford-Cal dual meet, which Stanford won handily.

Peter Marshall then took over and swam a very fast 19.24. Jeff Guyman hit the wall in 19.31 and defending Pac-10 100 fly champ Bobby O'Bryan got home
in 19.78.

The previous national leader was Florida's 1:17.94 from the Southeastern Conference Championships.

Cal got a fast leadoff leg from Croatian Olympian Duje Draganja (pr 19.88), and Ervin's 18.99 anchor was, far and away, the fastest split too.

Schoeman led off in 19.64 for the Wildcats, who swam a 1:18.71 for third and an NCAA considerfation cut (auto is 1:18.47).

In the 500, Vendt, the third-fastest qualifier behind Keller and Stanford's Matt Sorlein, swam an impressive wall-to-wall 4:16.31 to win by more than two and-a-half seconds over his defending-champ teammate (4:18.85) and Sorlein's pr 4:18.82.

Vendt's time ranks him second nationally, a mere .01 behind Michigan freshman Dan Ketchum's 4:16.30 from last weekend's Big 10s at Bloomington. Vendt's pr is 4:16.13 from last year's NCAAs. Both he and Keller will be after the Trojan school-record of 4:13.06 by Olympic gold medalist Mike O'Brien that won the 1985 NCAA title.

O'Brien, then coached by current USC headman Mark Schubert when they were at Mission Viejo, never went faster. He also won the 1650 at NCAAs that season.

The top three finishers made the NCAA auto cut of 4:19.72 with SC's Jeff Lee (4:22.20), Trent Staley (4:22.36), Rodrigo Castro (4:22.17p) and Mark
Warkentin (4:23.52p) also making the consideration cut of 4:27.51.

All eight finalists made at least the "B" standard as SC went one-two (Vendt, Keller); four-five (Lee, Staley) and seven-eight (Castro-Warkentin).

The other non-SC finalist aside from Stanford's Sorlein was Arizona State's British Olympian, Gavin Meadows, in 4:22.55 for sixth..

In the 200 IM the race's top-qualifier, SC's Tamas Kerekjarto (1:46.48), was forced to scratch when he injured his shoulder during the race. When asked
rhe seriousness of the injury, Schubert said: "Bad enough to keep him out tonight but beyond that we just don't know."

The final went off with defending champ Rogan seemingly on his way to another record swim (he set the standard last season with his 1:44.57). He was fourth after the opening fly leg but then split a blazing 24.74 backstroke leg (taking just three strokes after gliding the maximum 15 yards
underwater) — and had a 47.94-49.85 lead over teammate Trupin.

After the breaststroke leg Rogan still led (1:19.07-1:19.29) but Trupin was coming on strong.

And how!

He split 24.54 coming home on the freestyle leg to Rogan's 25.51 and that was all she wrote, baaaaaaabbbbbbbbeeeeeeee! (On Dusing's record swim he got home in 24.64, a tenth slower. And his 100 split (48.43) was a half-second slower than Rogan's, which is fastest all-time.)

Trupin's final winning time was a nation-leading 1:43.83, a drop of more than three seconds off his old pr of 1:47.10 from last year's YMCA Nationals. Rogan was not too shabby either, going a 1:44.58 — just .01 off his old Pac-10 record. which was also the old Cardinal record — and the No. 2 national time.

How good is 1:43.8? How 'bout fourth-performance, third-performer all-time and a U.S.A. Swimming 17-18 National Age Group record by several seconds.

Only former Texas star Nate Dusing's American/NCAA record of 1:42.85 from last season's NCAAs, and Florida'Greg Burgess' 1:43.52-1:43.66 from the '93
and '94 NCAAs are faster.

So Trupn is in some rather exalted company at a rather early point in his budding career.

"Always something to surprise you," said Card assistant coach Ted Knapp. "They (Trupin and Rogan) train together and Dan had never beaten him before
so this is a big step forward,."

Added Card assistant coach Gordie Collett: "On his [Trupin's] breast-free turn he got some great acceleration off the wall and you can see that he can
bring it home real good. He's got more in him but then so does Markus, and looking over there [at Rogan] you can see he's really mad."

Ironically, Trupin's father is a Cal grad and Bear coach Nort Thornton said he did his best to recruit the Illinois youngster — but to no avail.

The 50 free saw Schoeman win his first Pac-10 titl;e with a 19.36-19.42 edging of defending champ Ervin. Schoeman's seasonal pr is 19.33 from the Longhorn Invitational in Austin last December; 19.42 is Ervin's
seasonal-best.

They'll rank 1-2 going into NCAAs and Bal's 19.46 from the Cal meet will rank him third. He was also third tonight (19.62) with a top-qualifier of 19.55 in the prelims. Card Jeff Guyman went a 19.82 for fourth, just off his seasonal- and career-pr of 19.79 against Cal.

In the 400 medley relay, Stanford's Marshall led off in 46.41, about a second off his nation-leading 45.51 — fstest-ever in a dual meet — that he swam agaisnt Cal. Michael Bruce split 53.37 for the breast leg, Dan Westcott went 46.22 for the fly and Andrew Schnell anchored in 43.62 for the national No. 1 3:09.22 — another Pac-10 record.

The old mark was Stanford's 3:10.50 from '95.

While a great time by the Cardinal, it was done with essential only half of their "A" team. At NCAAs in the finals it'll likely be O'Bryan on the fly and Bal on the anchor.

Cal got a super leadoff leg from soph Alex Lim, a Malaysian Olympian, as he clocked a pr and Cal school-record 46.13, easily the fastest. Ervin anchored in 42.10 and Da Bears' 3:09.92 also broke the old conference record and is No. 2 nationally.

Auburn's 3:09.99 from SECs had been the fastest national time.

— Bill Bell

     42ND MEN'S PACIFIC-10 SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
BELMONT PLAZA OLYMPIC POOL
BELMONMT SHORES, CA., MARCH 7

25 Yd.
