Freeman used their impressive depth to secure the team title on the boys&#8217; side with a final score of 292.\u00a0John Champe&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sam Oliver\u00a0<\/strong>set a new state record in the 500 free, blasting a time of 4:23.92 during finals.<\/p>\n<p>Briar Woods had two state record-setting relays and a pair of Class 5 marks by sophomore\u00a0<strong>Mackenzie McConagha\u00a0<\/strong>en route to finishing second overall with 197.5 points behind team champion Patrick Henry Roanoke (240).\u00a0Broad Run&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kayla Graham\u00a0<\/strong>also set a new Class 5 record to help her team finish third with a final score of 114.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2019-virginia-class-5-state-championships\/high-school\/2019\/February\/16?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fhigh-school%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for full results.<\/p>\n<h1>Boys Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<p>1. Douglas S. Freeman &#8211; 292<br \/>\n2. Rock Ridge &#8211; 212<br \/>\n3. Thomas Jefferson &#8211; 210.5<br \/>\n4. JR Tucker &#8211; 149<br \/>\n5. Briar Woods &#8211; 138<\/p>\n<p>The meet began as Douglas S. Freeman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mark Graff\u00a0<\/strong>(24.71),\u00a0<strong>Aidan Duffy\u00a0<\/strong>(26.42),\u00a0<strong>Colin Whiting\u00a0<\/strong>(22.95) and\u00a0<strong>Erik Kratzer\u00a0<\/strong>(21.60) won the opening 4&#215;50 medley relay in 1:35.68.\u00a0They also won the 4&#215;50 free relay as the team of\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Viers\u00a0<\/strong>(21.62),\u00a0<strong>Reid Hutcherson\u00a0<\/strong>(22.15), Whiting (21.17) and\u00a0<strong>Dain Ripol\u00a0<\/strong>(21.09) touched in 1:26.03.<\/p>\n<p>Douglas S. Freeman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hunter Locher\u00a0<\/strong>got his hand to the wall first in the 200 IM with a final time of 1:52.62, just ahead of his teammate Duffy&#8217;s 1:52.89. Duffy later won the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall first in 58.25.<\/p>\n<p>Briar Woods&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jack Moore\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:38.78 as the first of only two swimmers in the field to crack the 1:50 mark.\u00a0Lee&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ari Snow\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 353.40 while Oliver<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>raced to the top spot in the 500 free, finishing in 4:23.92 for the win and a new Virginia state record.<\/p>\n<p>Rock Ridge&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trace Wall\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed his way to a gold medal in the 50 free with a quick 20.88.\u00a0Deep Run&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nikolas Lee-Bishop<\/strong> won a close 100 free battle in 45.79, just ahead of runner-up Wall (45.82).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noah Bowers\u00a0<\/strong>of Patrick Henry Roanoke flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 47.66 as the only athlete under the 50-second barrier. He then went on to win the 100 back in 48.12, just shy of his own Class 5 record of 48.04.<\/p>\n<p>JR Tucker&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Patrick Madden\u00a0<\/strong>(48.12),\u00a0<strong>Daniel Chance\u00a0<\/strong>(47.70),\u00a0<strong>Dominic Mistretta\u00a0<\/strong>(48.97) and\u00a0<strong>Christopher Dalla Valle\u00a0<\/strong>(45.76) concluded the boys&#8217; meet with a win in the 4&#215;100 free, combining for a time of 3:10.55.<\/p>\n<h1>Girls Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<p>1. Patrick Henry Roanoke &#8211; 293<br \/>\n2. Briar Woods &#8211; 278.5<br \/>\n3. Broad Run &#8211; 162<br \/>\n4.\u00a0Douglas S. Freeman &#8211; 151<br \/>\n5. Menchville &#8211; 146<\/p>\n<p>Briar Woods&#8217;\u00a0McConagha (25.40),\u00a0<strong>Abby Harter\u00a0<\/strong>(28.13),\u00a0<strong>Katie Winklosky\u00a0<\/strong>(25.94) and\u00a0<strong>Jordan Wenner\u00a0<\/strong>(23.34) got the meet off to a fast start in the 4&#215;50 medley relay. Their time of 1:42.81 broke the Virginia overall state record of 1:43.02, as well as the Class 5 mark of 1:43.62.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Henry Roanoke&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caroline Kulp\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 free in 1:49.00, just shy of her own Class 5 record of 1:48.57 she set last year. She also won the 500 free in 4:55.75 as the first of two swimmers under five minutes, again off her own class mark of 4:49.14.<\/p>\n<p>Graham<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 IM in 2:00.13, just slightly ahead of Harter&#8217;s 2:00.16. Graham&#8217;s time broke Harter&#8217;s Class 5 record of 2:00.26 set in 2017.\u00a0Princess Anne&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Olivia Francella\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 411.55.<\/p>\n<p>Kecoughtan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brieanna Romeny\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed her way to the gold medal in the 50 free, winning the event in a swift 23.38. Romney showed off her sprint talent by also winning the 100 free in 50.96.<\/p>\n<p>McConagha flew to first in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall in 53.50 just ahead of Graham (53.75) to eclipse\u00a0<strong>Whittney Hamilton&#8217;s <\/strong>Class 5 mark of 53.51 set two seasons ago. She also won the 100 back (53.73) en route to break her own Class 5 record of 54.41.<\/p>\n<p>Briar Woods set another relay record, this time in the 4&#215;50 free as the team of Wenner (23.97), McConagha (23.55),\u00a0<strong>Mackenzie Cunnane\u00a0<\/strong>(24.05) and Harter (22.76) finished in 1:34.33 to break the state and Class 5 record of 1:35.45.<\/p>\n<p>Harter won the 100 breast, getting her hands to the wall in 1:02.49 to break the Class 5 record of 1:02.85 she set last year.\u00a0Patrick Henry Roanoke&#8217;s\u00a0Kulp (51.62),\u00a0<strong>Shelby Stanley\u00a0<\/strong>(51.85),\u00a0<strong>Brooke Knisely\u00a0<\/strong>(52.95) and Hamilton (51.94) concluded the meet as championsin the 4&#215;100 free relay in 3:28.36.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019 Virginia Class 5 State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at George Mason University\u2019s Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va.
