The 2019 Kansas 6A Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka, Kan.<\/p>\n

Kevin Glenn\u00a0<\/strong>broke the Kansas 6A state record in the 100 back to guide\u00a0O P Blue Valley West to the team title with 280.5 points.\u00a0O P Blue Valley North’s 4×50 free relay also broke the 6A state mark en route to finishing a close second with a score of 278.<\/p>\n

The meet began as Olathe-East’s\u00a0Aidan Walters\u00a0<\/strong>(25.34),\u00a0Phillip Costello\u00a0<\/strong>(25.97),\u00a0Micah Leslie\u00a0<\/strong>(23.16) and\u00a0Jack Gabrielson\u00a0<\/strong>(21.46) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.93, only inches ahead of runner-up Wichita East (1:35.98). Lawrence Free State was third in 1:36.25.<\/p>\n

O P Blue Valley West’s\u00a0Jonah Park\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:41.25 for the fold. Silver went to O P Blue Valley North’s\u00a0Logan McMonigle\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:43.08 while Shawnee Mission North’s\u00a0Trey Smith\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed bronze in 1:44.93.<\/p>\n

Shawnee Mission West’s\u00a0Will Frankel\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board, finishing with a final score of 499.10.\u00a0Zane Kohl\u00a0<\/strong>of Manhattan finished second with 444.95 points while\u00a0Christian Tafoya\u00a0<\/strong>of Derby\u00a0took third with a total score of 436.40.<\/p>\n

Glenn\u00a0<\/strong>led the top three swimmers in the 200 IM under the two-minute marker, winning the event in 1:54.41. Shawnee Mill Valley’s\u00a0Christian Sprenger\u00a0<\/strong>raced to second in 1:55.36 while Shawnee Mission East’s\u00a0Sam Bruck\u00a0<\/strong>touched third in 1:58.20.<\/p>\n

Wichita East freshman\u00a0Drayden Bell\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed his way to victory in the 50 free, posting a quick time of 20.73. Lawrence Free State’s\u00a0Benjamin Vorthmann\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 21.07 while O P Blue Valley North’s\u00a0Marshall Wietharn\u00a0<\/strong>placed a close third in 21.10.<\/p>\n

Reilley Moore<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0Lawrence Free State flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.18 for the win. Smith raced to second place in 51.89 while Weitharn again finished third with a time of 52.02.<\/p>\n

After taking second in the 50 free, Vorthmann redeemed himself by winning the 100 free in a swift 46.00. The splash-and-dash champion Bell (46.46) and O P Blue Valley North’s\u00a0Sean North\u00a0<\/strong>(47.00) finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Park added another gold medal to his hardware collection, adding the 500 free to his 200 free victory by winning the race in 4:37.70. Eight seconds back was his teammate\u00a0Sam Foster\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:45.42 and Wichita Southeast’s\u00a0Alec Lebeda\u00a0<\/strong>completed the top three in 4:47.89.<\/p>\n

O P Blue Valley North’s\u00a0North (21.19), Wietharn (21.65), McMonigle (20.64) and\u00a0Richie Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>(21.09) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.57, bettering their own Kansas 6A record of 1:25.47 set back in 2017. Olathe-East (1:27.94) was second and O P Blue Valley West (1:29.20) was third.<\/p>\n

Not too long after his 200 IM win, Glenn was back in the water to win the 100 back in record-setting fashion. His final time of 50.14 broke\u00a0Ben Scheffer’s\u00a0<\/strong>previous 6A record of 50.43 from 2011. Wichita North’s\u00a0Isaac Hadorn\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 52.72 and Wichita East’s\u00a0Sam Hutchinson\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 53.22.<\/p>\n

After swimming the breaststroke leg on the victorious medley relay, Costello won the individual 100 breast by getting his hands to the wall first in 57.80. Also under 60 seconds was runner-up\u00a0Sprenger in 58.78 and O P Blue Valley West’s\u00a0Chase Lane\u00a0<\/strong>wound up third in 1:00.01.<\/p>\n

O P Blue Valley North was also victorious in the 4×100 free relay to conclude the meet. The team of McMonigle (47.75), North (46.91), Sam Peterson\u00a0<\/strong>(49.29) and Stewart (46.76) combined for a time of 3:10.71 ahead of Lawrence-Free State (3:11.62) and Wichita East (3:12.11).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
