Marquette used their depth to secure the girls&#8217; team title with 352 points while Houghton did the same on the boys&#8217; side with a final score of 313.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2019-michigan-upper-peninsula-state-championships\/high-school\/2019\/February\/16?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fhigh-school%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for full results.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Girls Meet<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. Marquette- 352<br \/>\n2.\u00a0Kingsford- 217<br \/>\n3. Houghton &#8211; 185<br \/>\n4. Sault Area &#8211; 155<br \/>\n5. Gladstone &#8211; 131<\/p>\n<p>Marquette began their winning ways as the\u00a04&#215;50 medley relay, consisting of <strong>Lexi LaCombe <\/strong>(29.87), <strong>Kelsey Glover<\/strong> (33.34), <strong>Erin Vanderschaaf<\/strong> (28.65) and <strong>Mollie Kilpela<\/strong> (25.34), earned gold with a final time of 1:57.20. Vanderschaaf later earned an individual gold in the 500, winning by over 30 seconds with a final time of 5:14.14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taryn Aho<\/strong> of Marquette cruised to first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.01.\u00a0<strong>Kali McDonough<\/strong>\u00a0gave Marquette another victory by diving to first on the 1-meter board with a total score of 163.90.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s 100 fly winner,\u00a0<strong>Aliah Robertson<\/strong> of Kingsford, took first in the 200 IM this year with a time of 2:10.02. She also was victorious in the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 59.40.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Joanne Arbic<\/strong> of Sault Area took first in the 50 free, sprinting her way to the wall with a time of 25.35. She then continued her success in the sprint events by winning the 100 free in a quick 56.21.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Kingsford\u2019s 4&#215;50 free relay <strong>Emily Bruns<\/strong> (26.99), Sydney Scott (26.25), <strong>Allie Schoenborn<\/strong> (26.34), and <strong>Peyton Johnson<\/strong> (23.93) led their team to an Upper Peninsula record and first-place finish with a final time of 1:43.51.<\/p>\n<p>Kingsford High\u2019s <strong>Peyton Johnson<\/strong> took gold in the 100 back over eight seconds before second-place finisher LaCombe with a time of 56.71. <strong>Sydney Herioux<\/strong> of Gladstone was the only 100 breastroker to break 1:10, doing so with a time of 1:08.95.<\/p>\n<p>Marquette finished off the girl\u2019s events on a high note to secure their team title with a win in the 4&#215;100 free relay. <strong>Paige Whaley <\/strong>(57.56), <strong>Delaney Marchiol<\/strong> (58.36), <strong>Jayme Winn <\/strong>(57.58),and Vanderschaaf (55.06) defeated Kingsford\u2019s relay by exactly one second, finishing at 3:58.56.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Boys Meet<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong> Top 5 Team Scores:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. Houghton &#8211; 313<br \/>\n2. Marquette &#8211; 203<br \/>\n3. Gladstone &#8211; 203<br \/>\n4. Kingsford &#8211; 168<br \/>\n5. Sault Area &#8211; 117<\/p>\n<p>Houghton started the boys&#8217; meet strong with a win in the 4&#215;50 medley relay as the squad consisting of <strong>Kevin Beaghan<\/strong> (28.29), <strong>Davin Evans<\/strong> (32.57), <strong>Cameron Jackson<\/strong> (28.41) and <strong>Colton Haataja<\/strong> (23.34) won the opening event in 1:52.61.<\/p>\n<p>Innerebner\u00a0earned an Upper Peninsula record in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.02 &#8211; 24 seconds ahead of the runner-up &#8211; to break his own mark of 1:46.36 set in 2017.He then scored another Upper Peninsula record and state title in the 100 free with a time of 48.27, eclipsing\u00a0<strong>Leevi Olson&#8217;s<\/strong> mark of 48.55 set last season.<\/p>\n<p>Beaghan earned an individual gold in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.67, followed closely by <strong>Kolbe Raiche<\/strong> of Kingsford with a time of 2:17.03. Later on, he also earned another piece of hardware in the 100 back with a winning time of 1:01.18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Nykanen<\/strong> of Marquette took first in the 50 free, splashing-and-dashing to the wall in 23.08 seconds. Haataja followed in second, touching the wall at 23.28. Nykanen also won the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall first in 1:07.37.<\/p>\n<p>Westwood\u2019s <strong>Brock Sundberg<\/strong> won 1-meter diving with a final score of 190.25.\u00a0<strong>Isaac Berthaume <\/strong>of Gladstone won the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 1:05.02 while\u00a0<strong>Josh Lundholm<\/strong> of Kinsford followed closely behind with a time of 1:05.83. Raiche won the 500 with a time of 5:32.83, nearly 20 seconds ahead of teammate and second-place finisher\u00a0<strong>Luke Sturm <\/strong>(5:52.52).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicholas LeClaire <\/strong>(25.37), <strong>Peter Noblet<\/strong> (26.42), Berthaume (24.73) and <strong>Tyler Barteld <\/strong>led Gladstone to a first-place finish in the 4&#215;50 free relay, combining for a final time of 1:41.48.\u00a0Marquette won the final relay:\u00a0<strong>Robert Bell <\/strong>(54.55), Wyatt Clement (58.59), Bobby Caron (1:01.44) and Nykanen (51.83) finished the 4&#215;100 free in a time of 3:46.41.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019 Michigan Upper Peninsula State Swimming and Diving Championships took place at Marquette Senior High School on Saturday, Feb. 16.
