The 2019 Wisconsin Boys DII State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Friday, Feb. 16 at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison, Wis.<\/p>\n

Edgwood dominated the meet, winning six events to secure the team title with a final score of 289. That ended the four-year reign of Monona Grove, who ultimately ended up second with 184 points. This is only Edgewood’s second championship crown in school history, with the first title achieved in 2014.<\/p>\n

The meet began as Edgewood’s\u00a0Alex Moen\u00a0<\/strong>(24.05),\u00a0Truman\u00a0<\/strong>teDuits\u00a0<\/b>(25.50),\u00a0Colin Senke\u00a0<\/strong>(23.99) and\u00a0Sean O’Connor\u00a0<\/strong>(21.53) won the 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.07, well ahead of runner-up Rhinelander (1:37.61) and Baraboo (1:38.00).<\/p>\n

Edgewood’s\u00a0Nate Frucht\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:42.26 for the win. Shorewood’s Evan Szablewski\u00a0<\/strong>raced to second in 1:43.64 while Berlin\/GreenLake’s\u00a0Sam Ryf\u00a0<\/strong>finished a close third in 1:43.97.<\/p>\n

Not too long after helping his medley relay victory win gold, teDuits was back in the water to lead the top five finishers under the two-minute marker in 1:51.84.\u00a0Baraboo’s\u00a0Aidan Lohr\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 1:52.53 and\u00a0Chilton Co-op’s\u00a0Parker Sonnabend\u00a0<\/strong>took a distant third in 1:56.64.<\/p>\n

Edgwood’s\u00a0Ben Stitgen\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board, posting a final score of 458.65 for the victory. Cedarburg’s\u00a0Garret Gonwa\u00a0<\/strong>placed second with 445.95 points while Port Washington’s\u00a0Cale Theis\u00a0<\/strong>took third with a score of 390.85.<\/p>\n

It was a tight 50 free battle, with the top five swimmers all within .08 of each other. Ultimately Fort Atkinson’s\u00a0Jeremiah Mansavage\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed his way to the win in a swift 21.90 ahead of Lakeland Union’s\u00a0Liam Hogan\u00a0<\/strong>(21.95) and Sturgeon Bay Co-op’s\u00a0Brock Aune\u00a0<\/strong>(21.96).<\/p>\n

After taking third in the 200 free, Ryf flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly. He got his hands to the wall the fastest in 50.13;\u00a0Rhinelander’s\u00a0Nolan Francis\u00a0<\/strong>raced to second in 50.88 as\u00a0Elkhorn Area’s\u00a0Hunter Johnson\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 52.61.<\/p>\n

Mansavage proved his sprint talent by winning the 100 free in addition to the 50, powering home to the win in 47.49. Moen was close behind in 47.89 for second place and third place went to Monona Grove’s\u00a0Josh Douberly\u00a0<\/strong>in 47.90.<\/p>\n

Not too long after taking second in the 200 free, Szablewski redeemed himself by earning gold in the 500 free after posting a final time of 4:39.48. 4:42.89 was fast enough for second by Doubrly and 4:43.73 secured third for Frucht.<\/p>\n

Rhinelander’s\u00a0Joseph Heck\u00a0<\/strong>(22.94), Francis (21.34), Devon Gaber<\/strong>\u00a0(21.91) and Russell Benoy<\/strong>\u00a0(21.57) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:27.76. Edgewood (1:28.15) and Elkhorn Area (1:29.98) finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Francis was the only swimmer in the field to crack the 50-second barrier in the 100 back, doing so with an impressive 49.91 to win gold. Silver went to Lohr in 50.74 and Moen grabbed bronze in 51.41.<\/p>\n

teDuits found himself on top of the podium yet again, this time in the 100 breast. He got his hands to the wall in 56.93 to lead the top four finishers under the 60-second mark. Aune took second in\u00a057.60 and Douberly placed third in 57.83.<\/p>\n

Edgewood secured their overall team title as Frucht (48.21), Senke (49.32), Moen (47.81) and teDuits (46.96) won the 4×100 free relay to conclude the meet in 3:12.30. Rounding out the top three finishers were Elkhorn Area (3:14.75) and Monona Grove (3:16.60).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
