\u201cEuropean athletes enjoyed another outstanding year and offered superb performances wherever they competed\u201d<\/em> LEN president Paolo Barelli<\/strong> said. \u201cFor European Aquatics certainly the European Championships were the absolute highlights of the year and the results achieved in Glasgow had a big impact on our prestigious awards. Let me congratulate all winners and all the others appearing on the shortlists, they deserve every credit for their determination and excellence. LEN shall maintain to keep the athletes in its focus and to create the best racing environment any time, anywhere at our events.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

On this 11th<\/sup> occasion there have been a couple of tight \u2018races\u2019, a single vote decided the outcome in men\u2019s artistic swimming and women\u2019s water polo and there were minor differences in the contests in men\u2019s swimming, in diving and in men\u2019s open water swimming.<\/p>\n

There were a couple of returning champions, Serbia\u2019s Filip Filipovic<\/strong> clinched his fourth award among the men\u2019s water polo players while the hero of the women\u2019s open water meet in Glasgow Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong> from the Netherlands came first for the third time. Sweden\u2019s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> (women\u2019s swimming), artistic swimmers Svetlana Kolesnichenko<\/strong> (RUS) and Giorgio Minisini<\/strong> (ITA) all repeated their respective victories from last year, while British diver Jack Laugher<\/strong> won for the second time after 2016.<\/p>\n

Four names are to be carved onto the sculptures for the first time: Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> (RUS, swimming), Celine van Duijn<\/strong> (NED, diving), Kristof Rasovszky<\/strong> (HUN, open water) and Sabrine van der Sloot<\/strong> (NED, water polo).<\/p>\n
