For the third-straight year, St. Pius X claimed the boys&#8217; team title while Chamblee grabbed the championship crown on the girls&#8217; side.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2019-georgia-1-5a-state-championships\/high-school\/2019\/February\/8?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fhigh-school%3Fpage%3D1%26orderBy%3DResult.MeetStartDateTime%26sortDirection%3D1%26q%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for full results.<\/p>\n<h1>Boys Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>St. Pius X &#8211; 364<\/li>\n<li>Woodward Academy \u2013 280.5<\/li>\n<li>Oconee County &#8211; 273<\/li>\n<li>Blessed Trinity &#8211; 250<\/li>\n<li>Starr\u2019s Mill \u2013 207.5<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Starr\u2019s Mill\u2019s <strong>Seth Roach <\/strong>(25.73), <strong>Ben Phifer <\/strong>(25.77), <strong>Michael Tucker <\/strong>(23.11) and <strong>Filip Borjeson <\/strong>(21.33) won the opening 4&#215;50 medley relay in 1:35.94, only three-tenths ahead of runner-up Woodward Academy (1:36.22).<\/p>\n<p>St. Pius X\u2019s <strong>Ian Grum <\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in a final time of 1:38.10 as the only swimmer in the field under the 1:40 mark. His second individual gold medal performance of the day came in the 500 free where he won in a 17-second lifetime best of 4:26.38.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed Trinity\u2019s <strong>Dillon Downing <\/strong>sprinted to the wall in a blazing 19.86 as the only swimmer under the 20-second mark in the 50 free, just off the 19.73 he dropped during prelims. He was just shy of the Georgia state record of 19.63 set by <strong>Paul Powers<\/strong> in 2014. Soon after, the senior was back in the pool to win the 100 free in a quick 43.63.<\/p>\n<p>Oconee County\u2019s <strong>Adam Brooks <\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board, posting a final score of 592.95 for the win. Riverwood\u2019s <strong>Brandon Rice<\/strong> finished with 592.10 points for a close second.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy Creek\u2019s <strong>Gabe Bartolomei <\/strong>earned gold in the 100 fly after getting his hands to the wall in 50.66. ROME\u2019s <strong>Samson Mumber <\/strong>led the charge in the 100 back, fininshing first in 50.68 to hold off Bartolomei\u2019s 50.96.<\/p>\n<p>Oconee County\u2019s <strong>Ben Gaffney <\/strong>(23.30), <strong>Tanner Schroer <\/strong>(21.75), <strong>Ryan Wylie<\/strong> (21.08) and <strong>Tucker Schroer <\/strong>(20.73) won claimed the 4&#215;50 free relay in 1:26.86.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the meet came from Bell in the 100 breast, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alabama-rings-in-verbal-commitment-from-liam-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Alabama commit<\/a> blasted a time of 53.83 for the win. That time broke the Georgia state record of 54.28 set by <strong>Mason Hunter<\/strong> last year. Bell also won the 200 IM in 1:49.65 as the only athlete to sneak under the 1:50 barrier.<\/p>\n<p>St. Pius X secured their team title by winning the 4&#215;100 free relay: the squad of <strong>Henry Halloran <\/strong>(49.89), <strong>Noah Daniels <\/strong>(49.11), <strong>Blake Reynolds <\/strong>(46.85) and Grum (44.55) won in 3:10.40.<\/p>\n<h1>Girls Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Chamblee &#8211; 262<\/li>\n<li>St. Pius X &#8211; 256<\/li>\n<li>Columbus &#8211; 255<\/li>\n<li>Starr\u2019s Mill &#8211; 222<\/li>\n<li>Decatur &#8211; 218<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Shamble began their winning ways as\u00a0<strong>Kyla Maloney\u00a0<\/strong>(26.24), <strong>Jade Foelske\u00a0<\/strong>(28.76), <strong>Teresa Maloney\u00a0<\/strong>(25.62) and <strong>Sophie Bell\u00a0<\/strong>(25.32) began the girls\u2019 meet as champions in the 4&#215;50 medley relay with a combined time of 1:45.94.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, Foelske was back in the water to claim an individual win in the 200 IM with a final time of 2:00.22 to best the field by over five seconds.\u00a0Her second personal victory of the day came in the 100 fly where she won by nearly a full second in 53.81.<\/p>\n<p>Riverwood\u2019s <strong>Haley Allen\u00a0<\/strong>dove to first on the 1-meter board with a total score of 490.40, about 25 points ahead of second-place finisher\u00a0<strong>Lauren Henderson\u00a0<\/strong>(475.55) of Marist. North Oconee&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Karen Zhao\u00a0<\/strong>powered home to the gold medal in the 200 free, winning by nearly a full second in 1:52.30.<\/p>\n<p>Buford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caroline Irwin\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed her way to a win in the 50 free in a quick 23.79 to edge out runner-up\u00a0<strong>Danielle Melilli\u00a0<\/strong>(23.82) of Chapel Hill. Melilli then found herself on top of the podium in the 100 free after out-touching Zhao (51.55) by three-hundredths.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abby Cohen\u00a0<\/strong>of St. Pius X\u00a0cruised to first in the 500 free with a new lifetime best of 5:01.80 while her teammate\u00a0<strong>Riley Hendrix\u00a0<\/strong>(55.77) edged out Maloney (55.91) in the 100 back.\u00a0Starr\u2019s Mill&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lauren Presley <\/strong>earned\u00a0the 100 breast gold medal, getting her hands to the wall first in 1:04.92.<\/p>\n<p>Starr&#8217;s Mill&#8217;s Presley (24.94), <strong>Hope Christensen\u00a0<\/strong>(25.64), <strong>Allyson Phinney\u00a0<\/strong>(24.70) and <strong>Avery McFaddin\u00a0<\/strong>(23.89) won the 4&#215;50 free relay in 1:39.17, while Decatur&#8217;s <strong>Annie Pfeufer\u00a0<\/strong>(52.04),\u00a0<strong>Hally Laney\u00a0<\/strong>(54.08),\u00a0<strong>Nadine Abrahamse\u00a0<\/strong>(53.87) and\u00a0<strong>Jane Pfeufer\u00a0<\/strong>(52.26)\u00a0concluded the meet by taking the top spot in the 4&#215;100 free relay in a time of 3:32.25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019 Georgia 4-5A State Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.
