I Women: SMU Leads WAC Championships After Day One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Feb. 27.  THE No. 8-ranked SMU women&#39;s swimming &#038; diving team swept day one competition at the 2002 WAC Swimming &#038; Diving Championships, placing first in both events Wednesday night at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. <\/p>\n<p>In the 200 yard medley relay, SMU landed their first gold-medal performance of the championships. The Mustangs recorded a time of 1:40.72. The time was almost three seconds better than their top time this season and just .05 off the WAC record. <\/p>\n<p>Taking second was Nevada with a time of 1:43.51, two seconds better than their fastest this season. In third was Rice with a time of 1:44.91, their best time by three seconds. Rounding out the field were San Jose State in fourth, Fresno State in fifth and Hawai`i sixth. <\/p>\n<p>In the only other event of the evening, the Mustangs swam to their second first-place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a winning time of 7:14.88, setting a new team best in the event for the 2001-02 season. The time, set by Georgina Lee, McCall Dorr, Flavia Rigamonti, and Lotta Wanberg, was also an NCAA qualifying time for the Ponies. <\/p>\n<p>Rice took second, touching the mat at 7:24.54, 16 seconds better than their fastest time this season. In third was Nevada with a time of 7:29.08, ten seconds better than their fastest. Rounding out the field were Fresno State in fourth, Hawai`i in fifth and San Jose State in sixth. <\/p>\n<p>The standings through one day of competition are SMU first with 40 points, Nevada and Rice are tied for second with 33 points.
