Texas won its first NCAA Championship three years later for the first time and, coincidentally, the meet was at the Texas Swimming Center.

Since 1981 Reese has amassed more NCAA titles (9) and developed more World, Olympic and NCAA champions than perhaps any other coach save Stanford's Skip Kenney. He [Reese] also has won the last two NCAA crowns.

In any event, the Texas men looked solid, but in some races their times were merely good but not great, as was the case with their women too. (But then, the men's meet was being held two weeks earlier than usual and was combined with the women for the first time ever, so perhaps that enters into the equation too.)

On the meet's concluding evening, Texas women won every event save one while the men took all but the 100 free, which was won by A&M's Matt Rose in an NCAA "B" cut of 43.71.

* * * * *

The Lady Longhorn of Co-Coaches Jill Sterkel and Mike Walker went into tonight's events hoping to sweep all, but A&M froshwoman Tiffany Moore went an NCAA "B" cut of 15:45.77 to win the 1650 free, followed by Longhorn Liz Hoffman (16:52.44) and Missouri's Katy Chandler.

In the 200 back, senior Bethany Lindberg went a season-best 1:57.75, just off her Big 12 record of 1:57.31 from last year. Her pr is 1:56.92 from the '01 NCAAs and her winning time is a solid NCAA auto standard.

Runner-up was A&M's Courtney Patterson (pr 1:58.70) with Iowa State's Melissa Jensen (1:58.72) swimming a pr and Cyclone school-record/NCAA "B" cut of 1:58.72 for the bronze.

In the 100 free, 'Horns Erin Phenix (49.38) and Tanica Jamison (49.53) went one-two and were both under the
"A'cut of 49.66. Phenix's pr is 48.73 from last season's meet while Jamison has a best of 49.48 from last year's NCAAs.

The 200 breast saw Longhown senior Valerie Oswald stroke to a 2:14.23 win (NCAA auto), with Cyclone sophomore Petra Plaminkova making the "B" cut with her pr of 2:16.59 — also a Cyclone school-standard. Third was Missouri's Mariona Costa with a pr 2:16.94 ("B").

Oswald began her collegiate career at Virginia, then transferred to Auburn and is now finishing up at Texas — where she hopes to earn an NCAA Championship ring in less than a month as the meet will be swum in her home pool the third weekend of March.

In the 200 fly Texas' Singapore Olympian, junior Joscelin Yeo, won in her seasonal-best 1:58.00 — just .06 off Nebraska's Rebecca Wolfe's meet-record
1:57.94 from last season.

Yeo, a transfer from Cal who sat out last season, also won the 200 IM and 100 fly. She has a 200 fly pr of 1:57.27 from the Cal-Stanford dual meet three years ago when she was a froshwoman at Berkeley.

A&M senior Clara Ho (1:59.57) was second, also making the auto cut, and Iowa State's Amber McDowell took third with her 2:00.99 (2:00.95p is consideration too).

Aggie Megan Zack, a talented sophomore. won the platform diving event and Texas concluded the splashing with a 3:19.06 400 free win, good for an NCAA "A" cut. Second was Kansas with a 3:23.79 consderation mark.

Overall, Yeo won seven golds (three individual, four relay) to match the record haul of Texas' now-graduated Colleen Lanne from last season. Lanne went on to win the NCAA 50-100 free titles. Not surprisingly, Yeo was named Swimmer of the Meet.

Longhorn frosh Alissa Schuknecht, who won the 400 IM, was named Newcomer of the Meet.

* * * * *

On the men's side the two most impressive swims were Texas freshman Rainier Kendrick's Big 12-record 1:43.92 200 fly and soph Brendan Hansen's Big 12-record 1:55.68 200 breast — both fastest nationally. Kendrick's time breaks the old Big 12 record of 1:44.12 by Texas' Nate Dusing from 1999, while Hansen held the old breast record with a 1:55.92 from last year.

Kendricks' swim ranks him 20th all-time (performers) and is a 17-18 National Age Group record too. However, his time isn't quite as good as the 15-16 NAG record of 1:43.57 set earlier this year. Of course that record belongs to the young man who holds the world record in this event (lcm), was an Olympian two years ago as a 15-year-old and this past summer as a 16-year-old was the youngest male winner at the World Championships — North Baltimore's Michael Phelps.

Hansen, defending NCAA 100-200 breast champ and World Champ in the 200 at Fukuoka, won the 100 breast last night.

He holds the American-NCAA record with his 1:53.11 from last year's Championships in this same pool, and won the 00 meters at the World Championships last year.

The fastest conference 200 breast is a 1:55.37 from the prelims of last year's Southeasteern Conference Championships at Tuscaloosa by Auburn's Dave Denniston. The former Tiger star, who has finished his eligibility, was second at NCAAs in a pr and Auburn school-record 1:53.48 — then history's third
fastest time (performer-performance).

The race's outcome might have been different had Denniston not tried to "steal" it from Hansen by going out extremely hard — 53.67 to the winner's 54.39 — which is by far the quickest first 100 ever in a 200.

In any event, Hansen and Kendricks form the nucleus of a strong and deep Texas team, along with Chris Kemp, Leffie Crawford, rookie Nathan O'Brien (200 back champ) and diver Troy Dumais who'll be primed to give No. 1-ranked Stanford all it can handle — and more — at the NCAA D1 Championships next month in Athens, GA.

Kendrick won a pair of other races here (200 IM, 200 free — the latter in a nation-leading 1:35+), and it's unfortunate Reese has been "hiding" him all season long.

"Hey, he's been with us throughout the year, just working hard and swimming tired. When he gets some rest — look out."

Kendricks, Hansen and Kemp were named tri-male Swimmers of the Meet and Kendricks was Newcomer of the Meet too.

O'Brien won the 200 back (pr and NCAA "A" cut 1:44.20) with teammate and triple Big 12 100 back Tommy Hannan second (1:46.10).

Aggie frosh Alfredo Jacobo was runner-up to Hansen in the 200 breast (albeit six seconds in arrears!) and Missouri's Radu Miclaus was second to Kendricks in the 200 fly (consideration 1:46.40).

Texas' 400 free relay went an "A" standard 2:54.63 with Hannan leading off in 44.18. Fastest leadoff leg was Aggie Riley Janes' pr 43.93, just off the NCAA "A" standard but well wtihin consideration time.

Janes, a senior, stopped Hannan's bid for a four-peat in the 100 back with his first Big 12 title.

Texas will be back in the water a week from this weekend at the American Short Course Championships at the Texas Swimming Center, where many of its athletes who have yet to achieve NCAA auto cuts will be seeking them there.

— Bill Bell

2002 BIG 12 WOMEN'S & MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP
STUDENT REC AQUATIC CENTER
TXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE STATION, TX., FEB. 23

25 Yd.
