Nassar<\/strong>. On January 17, 2018, WNBA All-Star guard <strong>Layshia Clarendon<\/strong> filed a civil lawsuit against University of California, alleging she was sexually assaulted by a former athletic department employee. Since the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/05\/us\/harvey-weinstein-harassment-allegations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0sexual allegations against the movie mogul, at least 425 prominent figures across all industries: sports, media and entertainment, politics and more have stepped forward against their abusers.<\/p>\n<p>These women in sport and other industries are part of thousands in a sea of voices that have taken a stand against their sexual abusers. Maroney, Claredon and Kukors are not the only ones who have come forward within the past two to three years in regards to sexual harassment. While taking responsibility and pinpointing coaches who have partaken in sexual misconduct is one step, another important part of the solution is an emphasis and revision of guidelines, structure and policy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/news-landing-page\/2018\/02\/22\/letter-to-members-about-usa-swimming's-safe-sport-efforts#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming letter to members from president and CEO <strong>Tim Hinchey<\/strong>:<\/a> \u201cLet me be clear: USA Swimming does not tolerate sexual abuse or misconduct, and I assure you that this organization is facing this extremely serious issue with one very clear goal \u2013 protecting children and athletes.\u201d -February 22, 2018<\/p>\n<p>With that being said, below is a list of current policies, rules and regulations within USA Swimming aimed to protect athletes and provide a framework for coaches and other swimming officials to handle the matter correctly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/docs\/default-source\/safe-sportdocuments\/safe-sport-basics\/2018-code-of-conduct.pdf\">USA Swimming Code of Conduct: Article 305 athlete protection policies<\/a> \u2013addresses behavior such as inappropriate touching (i.e. massages and rubdowns), sexual advances towards a minor, and use of visual or audio devices in locker rooms.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/docs\/default-source\/safe-sportdocuments\/safe-sport-basics\/2018-code-of-conduct.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming Code of Conduct: Article 306 Sexual Misconduct Reporting Requirements<\/a> \u2013 it is mandated duty to report any incident of sexual misconduct described by Safe Sport Code. Reporting requirements entail firsthand knowledge and specific and credible knowledge. Reporting may also require police action if violation of law is viable. False allegations of sexual misconduct can lead to disciplinary action deemed necessary by USA Swimming.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flipping-switch-end-child-sexual-abuse\/\">Safe Sport Code<\/a>: zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other improvements the organization has made over years deserve recognition as well. For example, since 2011, all non-athlete members are required to participate in and renew their athlete protection training every two years. In 2014, USA Swimming reached out to <strong>Victor Vieth<\/strong>, executive director of the <strong>Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center<\/strong>, and asked him to conduct an independent review of the USA Swimming Safe Sport Program to oversee policies, training programs and all past case files. Vieth\u2019s examination resulted in 54 recommendations. Parents, coaches, kids should feel safe and comfortable in their training environment. USA Swimming and the NCAA have made great strides to improve upon how it handles sexual harassment.
