HEERENVEEN, The Netherlands, June 30. THE two-day Dutch Sprint Championships took place in Heerenveen this weekend with several strong short course meter performances from the assembled field of sprinters. While a few national junior records fell, several other strong Paralympic swims went up on the scoreboard including a world record.<\/p>\n
Maiike de Waard set the national 17-year-old age division record with a 27.54 in the women's 50-meter back. That swim upended her previous junior record of 28.58, and also cleared the meet record of 27.63 set by Kira Toussaint last year. De Waard eclipsed another junior record, this time in the women's 50-meter fly with a 26.67 for the win. That performance surpassed the heralded 2006 mark of 27.48 set by a young Ranomi Kromowidjojo. That's some seriously strong company to be a part of, as Kromowidjojo is a three-time Olympic gold medalist. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Wendy van den Zanden tied the meet record in the women's 100-meter IM with a 1:01.37, while Lisane van Avezaath lowered the Dutch junior record with a second-place 1:04.18. That swim clipped the 2003 mark of 1:04.40 set by Moniek Nijhuis. Van den Zanden downed the mark even further in finals with a 1:00.83, while van Avazaath also dipped under her standard with a 1:04.12.<\/p>\n
In multi-class events, Chantal Molenkamp had a strong meet, including lowering her own world record in the women's 50-meter fly S10. Molenkamp surged to a 30.85 in finals of the sprint fly, bettering her 31.23 from last summer here in Heerenveen at this same meet. Molenkamp also cleared the national record in the S10 division with a 28.97. Molenkamp retured in finals with a 28.76 to drop the mark even more.<\/p>\n
Marlou van der Kulk downed the national record in the women's 50-meter free S14 with a 27.91. Then, van der Kulk lowered her second national mark with a 32.62 in the S14 division of the women's 50-meter back. She further lowered her 50-meter free record in finals with a 27.46, then took her 50-meter back mark further with a 32.08 in finals. <\/p>\n
