MINNETONKA&#039;s David Plummer moved to second in the world this year with a scorching final 50 to surface triumphant from the deepest men&#039;s 100-meter backstroke heat in the world this year at the U.S. Nationals and World Championship Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Plummer, who trumped Olympic champion Matt Grevers in the men&#039;s 50-meter backstroke last night, did it again in the 100 with a blazing 53.10 against Grevers&#039; 53.25.  Plummer skyrocketed to a tie with Kosuke Hagino for second in the world behind Jeremy Stravius (53.09), while Grevers moved to fourth in the world with his time.  Grevers jumped ahead of Ryosuke Irie (53.33).<\/p>\n<p>Bolles&#039; Ryan Murphy, who became the first 18-and-under to clear the 54-second mark this morning with a 53.62, dropped his 17-18 U.S. National Age Group record even further with a scorching third-place 53.38.  That put him in a tie for sixth in the world rankings with Chris Walker-Hebborn of Great Britain. <\/p>\n<p>With both Plummer and Grevers a decade older than the young man, Murphy is going to be around for a long time to keep the U.S. backstroke dominance alive as the future of the stroke for Team USA. He&#039;s in a similar position as Chase Kalisz was last summer in the 400-meter IM.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State&#039;s Shane Ryan (53.84), Stanford&#039;s Eugene Godsoe (53.86), Califronia&#039;s Jacob Pebley (53.98), Wisconsin&#039;s Drew teDuits (54.27) and Machine&#039;s Jack Conger (54.33) put up the rest of the championship heat finishes. <\/p>\n<p>Schroeder&#039;s Mitchell Friedemann won the B final out of lane 8 with a 55.17, while Greenwood&#039;s Ryan Harty clinched the C final in 55.31.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coverage proudly sponsored by ArenaUSA.
