﻿{"id":348871,"date":"2019-01-26T10:08:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T17:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=348871"},"modified":"2019-01-26T10:08:26","modified_gmt":"2019-01-26T17:08:26","slug":"nick-sloman-defends-australian-open-water-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nick-sloman-defends-australian-open-water-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Sloman Defends Australian Open Water Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Noosa\u2019s <strong>Nick Sloman<\/strong> successfully defended his Men\u2019s 10km Open Water title at the 2019 Australian Open Water Championship at Brighton Beach in Adelaide, with training teammate <strong>Kareena Lee<\/strong> claiming her first Open Women\u2019s title.<\/p>\n<p>Sloman touched for gold in a time of 1:53:07.09 and in a tight race for silver and bronze, TSS Aquatic\u2019s Kai <strong>Edwards<\/strong> claimed silver in 1:53.12 38 and Kawana Water\u2019s <strong>Bailey Armstrong<\/strong> took the bronze in 1:53.14.25.<\/p>\n<p>The Men\u2019s 10km Open and 18 and 19-year-old Boy\u2019s race combined, to see them hit the water first on Australia Day.<\/p>\n<p>In the Boy\u2019s 18-year-olds race, recent Pier to Pub winner, Lawnton\u2019s <strong>Hayden Cotter<\/strong>, claimed gold in 1:53:12.63 and \u00adalso touched third overall, while <strong>Jack Wilson<\/strong> (Breakers WA) received silver in 1:53:33.67 and North Coast\u2019s <strong>Byron Kimber<\/strong> picked up bronze in 1:53:34.57.<\/p>\n<p>By securing a top-four finish, Sloman, Edwards, Cotter and Armstrong earned themselves a spot on the team that will travel to Doha for the first leg of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series. This race forms part of the qualification process for the FINA World Championships in Korea later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Perth City\u2019s <strong>Reilly Kennedy<\/strong> (1:53:52) took out gold in the Boy\u2019s 19-year-olds race with <strong>Riley Clout<\/strong> and <strong>Adam Sudlow<\/strong> picking up the silver and bronze respectively in 1:54:17.99 and 2:00:56.73.<\/p>\n<p>In the Women\u2019s Open event, coming home behind Lee (2:03.50.08) to claim second and third, were international swimmers <strong>Yan Siyu<\/strong> (2:05:36.15) and <strong>Dong Fuwei<\/strong> (2:05:49.61) from China.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Gubecka<\/strong> sisters, <strong>Chloe<\/strong> and <strong>Chelsea<\/strong> (last year\u2019s title holder), received the silver and bronze respectively as the second and third placed Australian swimmers in the Open event.<\/p>\n<p>The 18 and 19-year-old girls also swam with the Women\u2019s 10km Open water competitors in the second race of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Claiming gold in the 18-year-old\u2019s race was Kawana Waters\u2019 <strong>Mackenzie Brazier<\/strong> (2:05:55.71) \u2013 who also touched third overall \u2013 while Nudgee College\u2019s <strong>Jessica Mouatt<\/strong> (2:08:17.61) took silver and Perth City\u2019s <strong>Kelsey Eastwood<\/strong> (2:13:15.12) picked up bronze.<\/p>\n<p>Brazier, along with Lee and the Gubecka sisters have also been selected to travel to Doha in May for the FINA Marathon Swim World Series.<\/p>\n<p>The Kawana Waters club also picked up the gold in the Girl\u2019s 19-year-olds race with <strong>Madisyn Armstrong<\/strong> (2:06:53.61) finishing first, Yeronga Park\u2019s <strong>Laura Brosnan<\/strong> (2:08:30.25) claiming silver and Miami\u2019s <strong>Jade Slee<\/strong> (2:12.17.26) the bronze.<\/p>\n<p>In the final race of the day the Boys and Girls 16 and 17-year-olds made their way out to the course for the 7.5km race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruben Rees<\/strong> from Miami secured gold in 1:30:33.85 in the Boy\u2019s 16-year-olds race, followed by silver medallist <strong>Thomas Raymond<\/strong> (1:30:46.23) from Nudgee College and bronze medallist <strong>Kolby Gubecka<\/strong> (1:30:54.25) from <strong>Kawana Waters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the Boy\u2019s 17-year-olds race Bunbury\u2019s <strong>Kyle Lee<\/strong> (1:30:46.33) won gold with international swimmer <strong>William Thorley<\/strong> from Hong Kong touching in second.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana Waters\u2019 <strong>Zachary Bromage<\/strong> (1:30:52.49) and Manly\u2019s <strong>Logan Kaye<\/strong> (1:32:00.05) won silver and bronze respectively as the second and third Australians to finish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chloe Green<\/strong> (1:40:11.79) from Perth City took home gold in the Girl\u2019s 17-year-olds race with <strong>Isabella Coghlan<\/strong> (1:44:03.66) from Randwick City and Kiera Warn (1:49:14.15) from Revesby Workers receiving the bronze.<\/p>\n<p>The gold medal in the Girl\u2019s 16-year-olds race went to Miami\u2019s <strong>Sara Tazaki<\/strong> (1:41:03.44), with <strong>Ashley Finegan<\/strong> (1:42:09.42) from the University of NSW and <strong>Hayley Rowlands<\/strong> (1:44:18.69) taking the silver and bronze respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the coaches selected to accompany the team to Doha for the first leg of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series include: Noosa\u2019s <strong>John Rogers<\/strong>, Kawana Waters\u2019 <strong>Michael Sage<\/strong>, Lawnton\u2019s <strong>Harley Connolly<\/strong> and Yeronga Park\u2019s <strong>Rob Van der Zant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Day two of the 2019 Australian Open Water Championship begins tomorrow at 7:30am, with the Boys 14 &amp; 15 years 5km and the Girls 14 &amp; 15 years 5km swim kicking off the action.<\/p>\n<p>Check out more open water coverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/open-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Swimming Australia<\/i><i>.
