STANFORD, Calif., Feb. 23. THE top-ranked Stanford men's swimming team remained perfect in dual competition with a 195.5-104.5 win over No. 4 California this afternoon in the Avery Aquatic Complex.<\/p>\n
The Cardinal improve to 8-0 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-10 while the Golden Bears drop to 6-2, 3-1 Pac-10.<\/p>\n
Stanford, which said goodbye to its four seniors at their final homemeet, won 12 of 14 swimming events and broke an incredible eight pool records.<\/p>\n
In the first event of the meet, Stanford posted a pool record while winning the 200 medley relay. The Cardinal team of Dan Westcott, Michael Bruce, Matt McDonald and Jeff Guyman turned in a time of 1:27.19 – the third fastest collegiate time in that event this season. The time is an automatic qualifier for NCAAs.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Peter Marshall broke the pool record held by Stanford's Tate Blahnik (1999) in the 100 backstroke with a stellar time of 45.61. His automatic qualifying time is the fastest collegiate time this season. <\/p>\n
Not to be outdone, sophomore Michael Bruce broke the pool record in the 100 breaststroke as he posted a 54.02, breaking Cardinal Tyler Mayfield's record from 1986. <\/p>\n
Cal's Alex Lim (47.57) edged Stanford's Bobby O'Bryan (47.60) by .03 seconds in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n
Stanford finished 1-2 in the 1650 as Matt Sorlien took top honors in 15:49.62 and freshman Eric DiIulio placed second (15:50.35). The Cardinal also finished 1-2 in the 200 free as John Waters finished first (1:38.05) and Andrew Schnell took second (1:38.75). <\/p>\n
The next event, the 50 free saw four swimmers break the existing pool record – all were under 20 seconds. Cardinal Randall Bal and Golden Bear Anthony Ervin tied for first while posting a pool record time of 19.46, breaking Bal's record of 20.00 set this year. That time is the second fastest time in the country this season. Stanford's Jeff Guyman finished third in 19.79.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Markus Rogan continued Stanford's winning ways with a victory, and pool record, in the 200 IM. Rogan's time of 1:46.68 eclipsed the old mark of 1:47.57 set by Rob Canales in 2000. Freshman Dan Trupin took second in a quick 1:47.72. Dan Westcott won the 200 butterfly (1:46.07) in a provisionally qualifying NCAA time, edging Cal's Alex Lim (1:46.11).<\/p>\n
California's Anthony Ervin broke Cardinal Dod Wales (1999) pool record in the 100 free with a time of 43.38. Randall Bal was close behind at 43.71. <\/p>\n
Markus Rogan broke a second pool record on the afternoon when he won the 200 backstroke (1:41.58) with the fastest collegiate time in the country this year. Rogan broke Tate Blahnik's record of 1:42.78 set in 1999. <\/p>\n
Stanford finished 1-2-3 in the 500 free as Matt Sorlien won his second event on the day in 4:23.38. Trupin was second (4:30.13) and Eric DiIulio was third (4:35.21). <\/p>\n
Michael Bruce broke the pool record in the 200 breaststroke with time winning time of 1:55.85 – the fastest collegiate time this year. Bruce broke his own record he set last season.<\/p>\n
The Cardinal closed out the meet with a pool record time of 2:54.93 in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Peter Marshall, Andrew Schnell, Bobby O'Bryan and Randall Bal posted the fastest time in this event this year with their swim.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Brian Ferris finished third in the one-meter diving event (284.55) while teammate Adam Peterson took second in the three-meter event (279.60).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
