STANFORD&#039;s Eugene Godsoe made his first major international squad when he powered home with a dominant swim in the men&#039;s 50-meter fly at the U.S. Nationals and World Championship Trials.  <\/p>\n<p>The first time the U.S. has had 50s of the strokes as selection swims at Nationals has proven to be fruitful for some veteran sprinters.  Shortly after Christine Magnuson made the team in the women&#039;s 50 fly, Godsoe pushed himself onto the Worlds roster with a 23.29 in the men&#039;s race.  That swim vaulted Godsoe to eighth in the world rankings.  <\/p>\n<p>According to selection rules, only the 50 winners are in line for Worlds.  So, Tucson Ford&#039;s Matt Grevers&#039; last-minute gambit of making his World Trials cut in the 100 to potentially get a spot in the 50 fly didn&#039;t work out as he took second in 23.50.  Two weeks ago, Grevers put up a Trials cut during prelims of the 100 fly at the Phoenix Swim Club Summer Invite.  It nearly paid off.  <\/p>\n<p>SwimMAC&#039;s Tim Phillips took third overall in 23.69, while NYAC&#039;s Tyler McGill finished fourth in 23.80.  Tucson Ford&#039;s Giles Smith (23.96), SwimMAC&#039;s Cullen Jones (23.97), SwimMAC&#039;s Matt Josa (24.04) and Crimson&#039;s Wyatt Ubellacker (24.15) also competed in the finale.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee&#039;s Samuel Rairden topped the B final in 24.15, while Spartan&#039;s Bryan Williams claimed the C final in 24.73.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coverage proudly sponsored by ArenaUSA.
