And, as part of its commitment to the weekend, USAWP organizers donated polo equipment\u2014nets and balls\u2014and organized a splashball clinic, making for a total environment for the sport\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict? The event was a hit; and it will almost certainly happen again next year, perhaps with even more teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the East Coast, and in particular our area, we\u2019re always struggling with more games\u2014so the past weekend was absolutely a great idea,\u201d said <strong>Miras Jelic<\/strong>, one of the 14U coaches for the Northeast Zone. \u201c[W]hen I spoke with [USA Water Polo\u2019s] <strong>Anne Lawrence<\/strong> and <strong>Bryan Linton<\/strong>, they said: We didn\u2019t know what to expect because Greensboro, North Carolina\u2014nobody was thinking about water polo there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you go and see this amazing facility, and the energy from local people to make this to be the best experience for everyone\u2026 It was just super-successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refining the Selection Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What distinguishes this tournament is that Greensboro represents an added layer in the selection process for the ODP National Championships in Riverside, CA on March 1\u20133. Photo Courtesy: USA Water Polo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jelic, who oversaw regional ODP camps in November and December, said that the increased number of attendees helped drive the decision to select a final roster through tournament play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn each of the two camps, you had over 75 kids, from that number you will pick 14\u201315 players who will represent our zone in California,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving this competition\u2026is a great opportunity for kids who maybe would not make the team [at the camps] but they have the competition now to get that confidence that this is the right sport for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the success of any tournament is the venue and its convenience. In that regard, the GAC scored high on many levels. Not only is it one of the finest regional aquatics facilities on the East Coast, its appeal was not limited to fantastic water. Photo Courtesy: Eric Gordon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve learned\u2014and I coached ODP for five years\u2014that if we can get the athletes to step up at ODP nationals and get recognized by these national team coaches, then they\u2019re on the radar for collegiate coaches,\u201d Entwistle said. And she pointed out that getting out of their comfort zones is essential for athletes in the East to fully develop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEast Coast coaches need to do that for our water polo players,\u201d she said. \u201cJust staying in their home towns and playing doesn\u2019t give them the flavor of what it\u2019s like to compete at a higher level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most compelling argument for this new tournament\u2019s success comes from a participant for Gordon\u2019s program. <strong>Tessa Bucher<\/strong>, whom <strong>Greg Mescall<\/strong>, USA Water Polo\u2019s Director of Communications dubbed the \u201cUnofficial First Lady of North Carolina Water Polo,\u201d was ecstatic about a high-level event so close to home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely amazing. We\u2019ve never had anything like this in North Carolina.
